Mustangs Knock Off UC Davis 57-54 to Start 2-0 in Big West Play

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's basketball finished the 2023 calendar year on a high note Saturday, using some Mott Magic to defeat UC Davis at home 57-54 to get off to a 2-0 start in Big West play.Natalia Ackerman and redshirt freshman forward Sierra Lichtie to help knock off the Aggies (4-8. 0-2 BW) for the first time in nine years. It's also the first time Cal Poly has started Big West play 2-0 since the 2016-17 season.
Ackerman finished with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. Lichtie finished with 16 points and six rebounds while shooting 6-9 from the floor. Guards Annika Shah and Ania McNicholas each added eight points apiece. McNicholas also had six steals while Shah led the way in assists with five.
It was a tough start to the game for Cal Poly as they found themselves trailing 11-0 after the first five minutes. They eventually found a groove later in the quarter and made it a 13-6 game after the first quarter.
The Mustangs turned it on in the second as they went on a 17-1 run over the first eight minutes of the quarter to take a 23-14 lead. They held the lead from there, taking a 27-21 advantage at the half.
UC Davis started strong to begin the third quarter, taking the lead back 36-33 before Cal Poly responded with nine straight points over the final three minutes of the third to take a six-point lead heading into the fourth.
In a game that saw 13 lead changes and two ties, the Aggies got themselves back tight with the Mustangs in the fourth. UC Davis scored the first 11 points of the fourth to go up by five. From there, Cal Poly answered back with six in a row to take the lead back 48-47.
With the Mustangs leading 53-51 with 17 seconds left, the Aggies' Megan Norris made a three with 10 seconds left to put them up by one. On Cal Poly's next possession, Ackerman got the ball in the key, drove to the rim, and made a tough layup to give the Mustangs a one-point lead with six seconds left.
UC Davis' Tova Sabel got fouled driving to the rim and had two free throws for the chance to give the Aggies the lead with two seconds left. However, she missed both.
The Mustangs will take this momentum back on the road with them next week when they head to Long Beach State Thursday and UC Santa Barbara Saturday.
