Cal Poly Concludes Non-Conference Play with Win Over Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO — Cal Poly women's basketball had it cooking Thursday morning as the Mustangs (4-6) shot 54-percent and had three players in double figures to go on the road and knock off Sacramento State 72-55 in their final game of non-conference play.
Junior guard Annika Shah led all players with 17 points on 6-13 shooting. Redshirt freshman forward Sierra Lichtie was right behind Shah with 16 points to go along with five rebounds for Cal Poly, who outrebounded the Hornets (1-8) 34-13.
Senior forward Natalia Ackerman recorded her third double-double of the season, notching 13 points and matched a career-high with 15 rebounds. Freshman Mary Carter returned to the lineup for the Mustangs after missing the last two games and went 3-3 from downtown to add nine points.
Cal Poly got off to a hot start, getting out to an 11-1 lead to begin the game before later going up as much as 20-8 in the first quarter. Leading by nine after the first, the Mustangs opened the second quarter with a 10-4 run and were in control, taking a 39-21 lead into halftime.
With the Mustangs up 48-31 with four minutes left in the third, Sacramento State made a 9-0 run to trim the deficit down to eight and made it a nine point game going into the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs started the fourth by scoring six unanswered points to push their lead up to 15. They never looked back from there, going up by as much as 21 while cruising to victory.
Cal Poly's four wins during non-conference play this season are the most since the 2020-21 season. They will now turn their focus to Big West play which starts Dec. 28 on the road at CSUN.
