Second Half Surge Propels Cal Poly Past Seattle U Tuesday

SEATTLE – Behind an overwhelming second half scoring surge in which Cal Poly outscored Seattle University 40-17, the Mustangs pulled off a 25-point road win over the RedHawks Tuesday, 68-43.
Junior guard Annika Shah put on an impressive performance with a season-high 22 points. She knocked down a career-high six threes to help lead the Mustangs (2-4) to victory. Senior forward Natalia Ackerman added 13 points, marking the fifth time she has scored in double figures. Junior Sydney Bourland chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
Cal Poly's defense stifled Seattle (0-5) as the Mustangs held them to 27 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers which they turned into 27 points.
Down 19-12 with eight minutes left in the second quarter, Cal Poly, on the backs of Shah and Bourland, went on a 13-3 run over the next six minutes to take a 25-22 lead. The Mustangs led 28-26 at the half.
Cal Poly's offense turned it up to another level in the second half. Up 30-29 with seven minutes left in the third, the Mustangs finished the quarter on a 16-4 run to take a 13-point lead into the fourth.
That run continued into the fourth quarter as Cal Poly scored the first six points of the quarter to go ahead by 19. The Mustangs never looked back from there as they continued to increase their lead late into the fourth.
Cal Poly will be off the rest of the week before heading down to Los Angeles Tuesday, Nov. 28 to take on No. 8 USC at 7 p.m.
