SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's golf second year head coach Courtney Roberts has announced the signing of three players to her 2024 recruiting class.
Joining the Mustangs are Jenny Keil from Bangkok, Thailand, Nicole Koong from Sammamish, WA, and Sara Torres from Bogota, Colombia. All three are high school seniors. Keil and Koong will come to Cal Poly in the fall of 2024 while Torres will come in January and start training with the Mustangs.
"We are really excited about all the signees in our 2024 recruiting class," Roberts said. "They embody the values of our program and come from great families."
Keil attends Bangkok Patana School where she has been a three-time varsity MVP. Outside of golf, she enjoys scuba diving and sport bike riding. She plans to major in Business/Marketing and said she chose to come to Cal Poly because "I like the learn by doing concept and the job opportunities that come from a Cal Poly degree. With golf, I liked the team and practice facilities as well as the coaching staff."
"We were immediately impressed watching Jenny compete," Roberts said. "She has great technical skills, works incredibly hard and has a winning demeanor on the course. She has excelled in tournaments all over the world. Not only does she impress on the golf course, but she also speaks three languages fluently, excels academically at the top international baccalaureate school in Thailand and we know she is going to make an immediate impact on our team."
Koong hails from Sammamish, WA where she has been a three-time Metro League Champion and two-time Metro League Player of the Year. Last season, she was the 3A State Champion runner-up. She also competed in the USGA Girls Junior Championship earlier this year where she placed 74th. In addition, she had three top-10 finishes in AJGA events in 2023 and a sixth-place finish at the Washington Junior Golf Association State Championship.
Koong, who is a direct descendant of the Chinese philosopher Confucius, has been Eastside Catholic Girls Golf Scholar Athlete and a member of the National Honors Society. She plans to major in Psychology and chose Cal Poly because "of the great balance of strong academics and golf program."
"We are thrilled to have Nicole joining our team next year," Roberts said. "Another standout competitor, she has a great golf swing, is hardworking and up for any challenge. A product of the Pacific Northwest, she grew up practicing and competing on world class golf courses. She is dedicated and determined to push herself to be the very best in all she does. We can't wait to have her as a part of our team and see her thrive in the environment at Cal Poly."
Torres has played for the Colombian National Team for the World Junior Golf Championship in 2022 and 2023. She was runner-up in Colombia's national match play tournament in 2023 and champion of the 2023 Guaymaral Open. In addition, she was also runner-up in 2022 at Colombia's national championship, the Camilo Villegas Cup and Maria Jose Uribe Cup.
Torres, who plans to major in Software Engineering at Cal Poly, also played volleyball in high school. She said she chose Cal Poly because "It has the perfect environment for me to grow as a player, student, and person."
"Sara is tall, smart, athletic, and determined," Roberts said. "She has represented her country in top international competition, most recently at the World Junior Girls Golf Championship in Canada. She is a powerful player and true competitor who will bring valuable international experience to our team. Sara is a great student and plans to study Engineering at Cal Poly. We can't wait to have her join our team in January."
