Mustangs on Downside of Saturday Matchup at First-Time Foe Wyoming
11/11/2023 10:35:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LARAMIE, Wyo. – Graduate guard Jarred Hyder (above) finished with game leading 25 points Saturday evening – missing a new career scoring high by one – but the Cal Poly men's basketball program, facing first-time opponent Wyoming inside the Arena-Auditorium, fell to the Cowboys, 80-66.
Senior guard Kobe Sanders added 14 points – his third successive double-digit scoring outing in as many games this season – for Cal Poly (1-2), which trailed by as much as 18 during the first half before cutting its deficit to seven right before the break. With the Mustangs playing the program's first all-time game in the state of Wyoming, however, the Cowboys (2-0) shot 52.1 (25-for-48) percent to keep Cal Poly at a distance.
An offseason transfer from California, Hyder's career scoring high of 26 came on Nov. 10, 2019 as a freshman at Fresno State. His 25-point effort Saturday included three three-pointers and a 4-for-4 finish from the free throw line. He also led Cal Poly in rebounds (five) and steals (three).
Cal Poly resumes action at California Baptist's Nov. 17-19 Lancer Joust tournament, opening play against another first-time opponent in St. Thomas on Friday, Nov. 17. Tip time is 4:30 p.m.
Facing an early double-digit deficit and a 33-15 disadvantage with seven-and-a-half minutes to go in the first half, Cal Poly responded with a 16-5 run backboned by nine Hyder points.
Wyoming ultimately took a 41-31 lead into the break and, in keeping Cal Poly to just two field goals during the opening seven minutes of the second half, built a 54-36 advantage.
A Hyder three-pointer with three minutes remaining dropped Cal Poly's deficit to 74-61, but that was as close as the Mustangs came to Wyoming down the stretch.
