
Mustangs Win Seven Events in Dual with Gauchos

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly swimming and diving program captured seven victories in a dual with Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at Anderson Aquatic Center.
Freshman Olivia Sundgren led the way, sweeping the women's distance events for the second consecutive dual. She took first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:21.41 and grabbed another victory in the 500 free with a time of 5:03.71.
Freshman Rhian Neitzel also secured a victory for the Cal Poly women, taking first in the 200 individual medley (2:12.43).
On the men's side, sophomores Finn Schlamp (pictured above) and Alex Seybold both captured individual victories. Schlamp earned first in the 200 butterfly (1:52.75), while Seybold won the 200 IM (1:55.45). Seybold also earned a runner-up finish in the 200 breast.
The Mustangs swept the 400 free relays as freshman Ella Bettencourt, junior Summer Cheng, sophomore Courtney Cross and senior Katie Faris led the women to a first-place finish (3:38.55), while Schlamp, freshman Luke Reyes, sophomore Nick Elliott and freshman Scott Iannaccone carried the men to a victory (3:08.53).
Sophomore Drew Huston, who qualified for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 100-meter backstroke in August, grabbed a pair of second place finishes in the men's 100 back and 200 IM. Senior Katie Cross secured second in the women's 200 IM, while senior Kelly McDermott took home second in the women's 200 back.
As a team, the men fell to the Gauchos 166-123 and the women suffered a 168.5-119.5 defeat.
Cal Poly hits the road for the first time this season when the team travels to Bakersfield for the CSUB Sprint Classic on Friday, Oct. 13, and the Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14.
