SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In Week 3 of the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll released Tuesday, the Cal Poly men's cross country program moved up one spot to No. 28 in the national rankings.
Last Tuesday, Cal Poly made its season debut at No. 29 in the Week 2 poll — marking the first time in 12 years the men's team received a national ranking. This week's ranking of No. 28 matches the highest by the Mustangs since the 2011 NCAA Championships where they finished 28th.
Cal Poly didn't compete this past week, but last time out the Mustangs had an incredible showing at the Bill Dellinger Invitational hosted by Oregon on Sept. 22. The men captured the team title at the meet, beating out a pair of ranked teams in then-No. 9 Portland and then-No. 15 Oregon. Six runners finished inside the top 25 for the Mustang men, led by graduate student Davis Bove who placed first with an 8K time of 23:40.1. The performance earned the Mustangs NCAA Men's Team of the Week honors. Bove's victory was also ranked as the fifth-best individual performance in the nation by a men's runner during the first month of the cross country season in an article on NCAA.com.
The Cal Poly women's cross country team received five votes nationally in the Week 2 poll released last Tuesday, but did not garner any this time around. Last week, both the men's and women's teams received votes in the national poll during the same week for the first time in program history.
The Mustang women shined at the Bill Dellinger Invitational as well, taking home third in a competitive field and finishing ahead of then-No. 17 Oregon State. Redshirt junior Schuyler Gooley was the first Mustang to cross the finish line in 16th and three other runners placed inside the top 40 — junior Hana Catsimanes (18th), sophomore Tatiana Cornejo (20th) and junior Carissa Buchholz (39th).
Cal Poly returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 14, sending its top men's and women's runners to Charlottesville, Va. to take part in the XC23 Invitational — which will serve as this year's NCAA Pre-Nationals meet. The rest of the team will race in the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara on the same day.
