SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In its final tuneup before competing in the Big West Championships, Cal Poly cross country will split the team between a pair of meets Saturday, sending the women's squad to the XC23 Pre-Nationals hosted by Virginia and the men to the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara.
The women will be in action first when they take the line in Charlottesville, Va. for the Blue Championship Race starting at 7:30 a.m. PDT Saturday. The XC23 Pre-Nationals will serve as this year's precursor for the NCAA Championships which will be held at Virginia's Panorama Farms on Nov. 18.
You can follow the live results for the XC23 Pre-Nationals here and a live stream of the race is also available on ACC Network Extra for people who have access to the ACC Network as part of their TV subscription.
The Mustang women will encounter five ranked teams in the race — No. 6 BYU, No. 7 Virginia, No. 17 Oregon, No. 19 Arkansas and No. 24 Utah Valley — and three squads that are receiving votes nationally — Michigan, Penn and Wake Forest.
The men, currently ranked No. 28 in the USTFCCCA National Poll, will head to the Bay Area on Saturday to take part in the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara at Baylands Regional Park. The men's 8K invitational begins at 8:45 a.m. and you can follow the live results here.
The last time the Mustangs were in action was Sept. 22 when the program impressed at the Bill Dellinger Invitational hosted by Oregon. On the men's side, graduate student Davis Bove captured the individual title to lead Cal Poly to a first-place finish as a team, beating out then-No. 9 Portland and then-No. 15 Oregon. For the women, four runners placed inside the top 40 — led by redshirt junior Schuyler Gooley grabbing 16th — to help Cal Poly secure third and finish in front of then-No. 17 Oregon State.
The performances allowed the Mustangs to receive some national attention in the Week 2 USTFCCCA National Poll as the men earned a national ranking for the first time in 12 years, while the women received five votes nationally. It marked the first time in program history that both the men's and women's teams received votes in the national poll during the same week.
Following this weekend's races, Cal Poly will begin gearing up for the Big West Championships, hosted by the Mustangs on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Blacklake Golf Resort in Nipomo. Cal Poly is looking to sweep the conference titles for the second straight year and the seventh time in program history.
