Cal Poly Outdueled by UC Santa Barbara in Tight Affair, 62-57
1/7/2023 4:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Graduate guard Chance Hunter finished with a Cal Poly best 19 points and senior forward Alimamy Koroma added 14 Saturday afternoon, but the Mustang men's basketball program – after leading UC Santa Barbara for a majority of the first half and with seven minutes remaining – was unable to overcome the Gauchos down the stretch, falling inside Mott Athletics Center, 62-57.
Koroma added a game high six rebounds and handed Cal Poly (7-9, 1-3) the 43-41 lead with seven minutes to play after sinking one of his six field goals.
However, UC Santa Barbara (12-2, 3-0) – which extended its winning streak to eight games – scored on its next five possessions and held Cal Poly scoreless for four-and-a-half minutes to go up, 51-43.
Cal Poly managed to cut its deficit to three points twice down the stretch, including a 57-54 disadvantage with 18 seconds to play after Hunter sank the fourth of his five three-pointers.
With Cal Poly forced to foul though, UC Santa Barbara converted all six free throw opportunities to close out the matchup.
With the 19-point effort, Hunter brought his four-year Division I scoring total to 999 career points.
Cal Poly resumes action on Wednesday, Jan. 11, opening a two-game road trip at Long Beach State. Tip time from the Walter Pyramid is 7 p.m.
The Mustangs trailed just once during Saturday's opening half, by only two points and for just 17 seconds. In carving out a 14-7 lead nine minutes before the break, Cal Poly kept UC Santa Barbara to just one basket during a 10-minute stretch.
Cal Poly's 19-16 halftime lead, however, was overturned in two-and-a-half minutes as UC Santa Barbara opened the second period with an 8-2 run.
The Mustangs tied the scoreline three times midway through the half before taking a brief 41-39 lead with seven-and-a-half minutes to go through a Koroma layup.
