FINAL RESULTS
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Austin Liu finished a round of 69 in the suspended second round of play, then followed with a 73 for a 31st-place finish, highlighting Cal Poly's performance in the spring-opening Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Tucson Country Club.
Liu finished with a 54-hole one-under-par 215 total on the 7,072-yard, par-72 course, sharing 31st place with three other golfers in the 15-team tournament. His total included a 69 in the second round.
Mustang teammate Ben Quick posted a pair of 73s Tuesday for a 217 total and 41st place while Jackson Parrish carded a 71 and 76 for a 220 aggregate and 57th place. Baron Szeto and Sean Lehman shared 71st place with two other golfers, all with 225 totals. Szeto posted a 68 in the second round.
Despite recording season-best totals for a single round (281), first two rounds (573) and all 54 holes (871), Cal Poly, 12th after the opening round Monday and tied for eighth place when the second round, suspended due to darkness, was completed Tuesday morning, finished tied for 12th place with Seattle, both with seven-over-par 871 aggregates.
Texas A&M claimed the team title with a 28-under-par 548 total, followed by Arizona at 23 under par and Cal at 22 under par.
Top individual honors went to Zac Jones of Brigham Young with rounds of 65, 69 and 66 for a 16-under-par 200 total, three shots ahead of runner-up Cal McCoy of Arizona. Three golfers -- Johnny Walker and Chaz Aurilia, both of Arizona, and Ian Gilligan of Long Beach State -- shared third place at 12 under par.
Quick was eighth in par-4 scoring at three under par while Liu finished seventh in the field of 84 golfers with 37 pars.
Coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs return to action Feb. 13-14 in the Orange County Collegiate Classic hosted by UC Irvine at the Coto de Caza Golf Club in Orange County.
