SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After etching her name into the Cal Poly track and field record books this weekend at the UW Indoor Preview, Carissa Buchholz was crowned Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career Monday.
In the first meet of the 2023 indoor season for the Mustangs, Buchholz ran a time of 9:34.11 in the women's 3,000-meter, good for No. 4 on Cal Poly's all-time list in the event. The performance allowed her to place 19th.
It was only Buchholz's second time running the 3,000-meter during her Cal Poly career and the South Lake Tahoe native shaved over 34 seconds off her previous personal best in the event.
Buchholz's time Saturday in the women's indoor 3,000-meter was the fastest by a Cal Poly athlete since Peyton Bilo in 2017.
In Seattle, Buchholz led the way on an impressive day for the Mustang women's distance program as Amanda Olla and Sydnie Rivas also posted the sixth and seventh fastest times in school history in the 3,000, and Tatiana Cornejo and Riley Cash both ran sub five-minute miles as true freshman.
This fall at the Big West Cross Country Championships, Buchholz helped the Cal Poly women capture their first conference title since 2018 by placing 19th.
