Three Record Double-Doubles But Cal Poly Falls to Northwestern

SEATTLE — Three Mustangs recorded double-doubles, but the Cal Poly volleyball team fell to undefeated Northwestern 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 20-25, 20-25) Thursday morning in its opening match of the Husky Invite in Seattle.Tommi Stockham finished with a season-high 15 kills and 10 digs to lead the Mustangs (0-4) offensively. Senior opposite Maia Dvoracek and redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis each recorded their third double-doubles of the season. Dvoracek had 11 kills, 12 digs, three aces and three blocks while Bullis dished out 30 assists to go along with a career-high 14 digs and five blocks.
Cal Poly got off to a strong start in the match. In the first set, they hit a season-high .312 while also putting up four aces and four blocks as a team. The Mustangs got out to an 8-2 over the Wildcats (7-0) to begin the set. Cal Poly took a 15-7 lead before four straight points by Northwestern cut the lead to four. The Mustangs answered back with an 8-1 run to take their largest lead of the set at 23-12 before going on to win the set 25-16.
The second set was back-and-forth early. With Cal Poly leading 9-8, the Mustangs used a 4-1 run to extend their lead to 13-9. However, down 15-11, Northwestern went on an 8-3 run to overtake Cal Poly 19-18. Tied 21-21, Northwestern scored the next four points to win the set 25-21.
In the third set, Cal Poly took a 6-5 lead until the Wildcats scored seven consecutive points to go ahead by six. Northwestern led by as many as seven before the Mustangs were able to trim the lead to 17-13. With the Wildcats up 20-14, Cal Poly stormed back with four straight points to get it back within two. Northwestern then scored the next three points to take a 23-18 lead before going on to win it 25-20.
The two teams traded early runs to begin the fourth set. Trailing 5-4, Cal Poly scored four points in a row to take an 8-5 lead. Northwestern then went on a 5-1 run to take the lead back at 10-9. Cal Poly tied it at 10 until a 5-1 run by the Wildcats put them back in front 15-11. Northwestern took a 19-13 lead before three straight points by the Mustangs cut the lead to three. Northwestern then pulled away for good after scoring the next three points to go ahead 22-16 before going on to win the set 25-20.
Cal Poly will be back in action later today in Seattle against No. 24 Pepperdine at 5 p.m.
