9/8/2022 8:50:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SEATTLE — Tommi Stockham and Maia Dvoracek combined for 43 kills and 26 digs, but Cal Poly's upset bid of No. 24 Pepperdine came up just short Thursday evening at the Husky Invite as they fell to the Waves (6-1) in a five-set heartbreaker, 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23, 17-15).
Stockham, Dvoracek, as well as redshirt freshman Emme Bullis all recorded double-doubles for the second straight match. Stockham finished with a season-high 22 kills and 12 digs while Dvoracek added 21 kills, 14 digs and three blocks. Bullis had a career-high 53 assists to go along with 12 digs and four blocks.
Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips nearly had a double-double herself, finishing with 10 kills while hitting .412 and added eight blocks. Junior transfer libero Jolei Akima had her most digs as a Mustang, finishing with a match-high 18.
Thursday's match against the No. 24 Waves marked the third consecutive time that Cal Poly has gone to five sets against Pepperdine. The Waves won in five last season while the Mustangs (0-5) won 3-2 in 2019.
In the first set, neither team held a lead of more than two points through the first 24 combined points. Cal Poly found itself down 15-11 before cutting it two within two and later one at 18-17. From there, the Waves scored three consecutive points to take a 21-17 lead. The Mustangs worked their way back once again with a 4-1 run to cut the Wave lead to 22-21. Pepperdine then scored three of the next four points to win the set 25-23.
Down 9-8 in the second set, a 7-1 Mustang run gave Cal Poly a 15-10 advantage. Later with the Mustangs leading 20-15, Pepperdine scored three straight points to get it back within two. Up 22-20, the Mustangs scored back-to-back points to have set point ahead by four. The Waves scored two consecutive points before a Stockham kill finished off the set for Cal Poly.
In the third set leading 3-2, Pepperdine went on a run of four straight service aces to go up 7-2. Cal Poly got back it in quickly with a 4-1 run to trim the lead to two. Ahead 10-8, the Waves stretched their lead to six after going on a 5-1 run to make it 15-9. Holding a 21-15 lead, Pepperdine scored three straight points to take its largest lead of the set at nine before going on to win it 25-17.
Cal Poly found itself trailing 8-4 to begin the fourth set. The Mustangs scored three straight points to cut it to within one. Down 11-9, Cal Poly scored three unanswered points to regain the lead 12-11. Tied at 21 later in the set, a 3-1 run by the Mustangs put them in front 24-22. Pepperdine scored the next point to cut it to one before Dvoracek put away a kill on an overpass by the Waves to seal the set for Cal Poly and force a deciding set.
The Mustangs got out to a hot start to begin the fifth set going up 5-2 and later 7-3. Up 8-5, Cal Poly scored three straight points to go ahead by six. However, Pepperdine responded with a 7-1 run to tie it 12-12. They went back-and-forth with each for the next several points with the Mustangs able to hold off two match points until, tied at 15, the Waves scored consecutive points off attack errors by the Mustangs to win it 17-15.
Cal Poly will finish off the Husky Invite Friday when facing the host school in No. 13 Washington at 7:30 p.m.
