SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After claiming the women's individual title at the Lagoon Invite on Saturday, sophomore Nina St. John has been named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Denver, Colo. native ran a 17:49.95 on the 5K course to secure first among the 25 women that competed in the season-opening meet hosted by UC Santa Barbara. It was St. John's first individual title in her third career meet for the Mustangs.
St. John, a 2021 Rock Canyon High grad, crossed the line two seconds ahead of UCSB's Sierra Ransweiler to earn the victory.
"Nina did a great job leading our women's team [Saturday], closing really well over the last half mile to take the individual win in an exciting finish," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Ryan Vanhoy said about her performance.
This spring as a freshman, St. John placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2022 Big West Track & Field Championships to score a team point for the Mustangs.
As a team, the Cal Poly women took home second at the Lagoon Invite, finishing 13 points behind the Gauchos.
Cal Poly cross country returns to action Saturday, Sept. 17, at the UC Riverside Invitational.
