Dvoracek, Bullis Record Double-Doubles in 3-1 Loss to UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham and senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek combined for 35 kills and 29 digs and redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis recorded a double-double but Cal Poly suffered its first conference loss of the season Friday, falling to UCSB 3-1 (1925-, 25-20, 25-19, 26-24) inside the Thunderdome.
Stockham led the Mustangs (5-8, 2-1 BW) offensively with 19 kills to go along with eight digs. Dvoracek delivered on both sides of the net, finishing with a double-double of 16 kills and a career-high 21 digs. She's now had double-doubles in all three Big West matches so far. Bullis also had a double-double with 40 assists and 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added eight kills and four blocks while sophomore libero Jolei Akima had 17 digs.
As a team, the Gauchos (7-6, 3-0 BW) out-blocked Cal Poly 17-6 and hit a better attack percentage, .248 to .176. Three players for UCSB finished with double-digit kills and three finished with at least seven blocks.
Tied 8-8 in the first set, the Mustangs went on a 7-2 run to take a 15-10 lead. They continued with scoring two the next three points to take their largest lead of the set at 17-11. Up 23-19, Cal Poly scored back-to-back points to win the set 25-19.
The Mustangs got out to a quick 3-1 lead to start the second set before UCSB went on a 5-1 run to take a 6-4 lead. Down 9-6, a 6-2 Mustangs run allowed Cal Poly to regain the lead at 12-11. After the Mustangs took a 13-12 lead, the Gauchos went on a 6-2 run to take back the lead at 18-15. Down 20-16, Cal Poly scored three straight points to cut the deficit down to one. From there, UCSB finished the set on a 5-1 run to win it 25-20.
UCSB opened the second set getting out to a 7-3 lead and later as much as a five-point lead at 10-5. Cal Poly scored three points in a row to cut it to 10-8 before the Gauchos answered with three straight points of their own to push the lead back up to five. Cal Poly then put up five unanswered points to tie it 15-15. Tied 16 apiece, six straight points scored by UCSB gave them a 22-16 lead and went on to win the set 25-19.
Down 5-3 in the fourth set, the Mustangs went on a 3-0 run to take a one-point lead. After UCSB took a 10-8 lead, Cal Poly scored four straight to go up 12-10. After the Gauchos cut it to 13-12, the Mustangs scored seven in a row to take a 20-12 lead. UCSB then went on an 8-1 run to cut the Cal Poly lead to 21-20. The Mustangs took a 24-21 before UCSB scored the next five points to win it 26-24.
Cal Poly will look to bounce back Saturday when taking on CSUN at 5 p.m. inside the Matadome.
