Larson Nets First Career Goal as Mustangs Drop Match at CSU Bakersfield
9/29/2022 9:58:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Freshman defender Annie Larson netted her first collegiate goal, but CSU Bakersfield scored twice in the final eight minutes to hand Cal Poly women's soccer a 3-1 road loss Thursday night in Big West action.
The Mustangs (4-6-1, 1-1-1 Big West) trailed 1-0 for nearly 66 minutes before Larson struck in the 69th minute. On a corner kick, Larson perfectly curled the ball over the hands of the CSU Bakersfield goalkeeper and into the back of the net to level the match at 1-1.
After the equalizer, all the momentum appeared to be on Cal Poly's side as a shot by senior midfielder Camille Lafaix in the 81st minute went just wide of the right post.
However, the Roadrunners (4-6-2, 2-1-1 BW) retook the lead in the 82nd minute on a goal from Catalina Roggerone, and less than two minutes later found the back of the net again to put the match away.
The Mustangs outshot CSU Bakersfield 15-9, including 10-5 in the second half, but were unable to walk away with the victory. The loss was Cal Poly's first in conference play, and it ended a three-match unbeaten streak for the Mustangs.
The Roadrunners struck just over two minutes into the match when Kalea Eichenberger scored on a cross from Regielly Halldorsdottir into the box. Diving to her right, sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel was able to get a piece of the volley, but not enough to keep it out. The score was one of two for Eichenberger on the night.
Freshman defender Camryn Penn was responsible for both shots on goal for the Mustangs in the first half. In the eighth minute, Penn registered her first collegiate shot on goal, and 13 minutes later her blast from outside the box was saved by CSU Bakersfield goalkeeper Hollee Hercik.
In the 14th minute, a CSU Bakersfield handball gave the Mustangs a free kick just outside the penalty box. Senior Monserrat Hernandez Marquez, who scored the latest equalizing goal in program history during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Hawai'i at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, stepped up to take it and saw her shot get blocked by the Roadrunners' wall in front of the net. Following a ricochet, senior midfielder Megan Hansen also had a shot attempt blocked.
After being held scoreless in the opening 45 minutes, Cal Poly came out aggressive in the second half as senior defender Kylie Rojas, freshman forward Caylie Button and Marquez all had dangerous looks at the net prior to Larson's tally.
The Mustangs finish off a two-match conference road trip with a visit to CSUN (2-10-1, 0-3-1 BW) on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
