SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore Aidan McCarthy has been named the Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
McCarthy earned the award after placing second at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday to help the Cal Poly men's cross country team capture first.
He ran the 8K UC Riverside Ag/Ops Course, the site of this year's Big West Championships, in 23 minutes and 45.9 seconds, the 16th-fastest time ever recorded on the course. It was also the highest finish of McCarthy's career.
The Mustangs cruised to the team title at the meet, finishing 31 points ahead of second-place Southern Utah thanks in large part to McCarthy's performance.
This is McCarthy's first Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week award. It's also the first time a Mustang has garnered the honor since Jake Ritter won it on Oct. 1, 2019.
This spring on the track, the Pleasanton, Calif. native won the conference title in the men's 800-meter and ran the second-fastest time in program history in the event (1:48.0) at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Arkansas to finish 15th overall and just 0.08 seconds shy of a berth to the NCAA Championships.
