Mustangs Sweep Santa Clara to Kick Off Northern Colorado Classic

GREELEY, Colo. — putting together its best offensive performance of the season, the Cal Poly volleyball team swept Santa Clara 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-21) Friday to begin the Northern Colorado Classic in Greeley, Colo. and earn its first win of the season.
The Mustangs (1-7) hit a season-high .323 in the win while holding the Broncos (3-7), head coach Caroline Walters' alma mater, to a .152 hitting percentage. Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek led the way with 15 kills, hitting .500, to go along with 10 digs and three blocks, her sixth double-double of the season. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham finished with 13 kills and eight digs. Redshirt sophomore Amy Hiatt came off the bench to add nine kills without recording an error on 14 swings to hit .643.
The Mustangs got out to a strong start in the first set. Tied 4-4, Cal Poly went on a 9-1 run to take a 13-5 lead. Santa Clara responded with an 11-3 run of its own to eventually tie it again, 16-16. After the Mustangs took a 17-6 lead, the Broncos went on a 4-1 run to take their first lead of the set at 20-18. Cal Poly answered back with four straight points to regain the lead before Santa Clara scored three consecutive points to hold a 23-22 advantage. After trading points to make it 24-23 in favor of Santa Clara, the Mustangs held off the Broncos with three straight points to win the set 26-24.
After Cal Poly opened the second set by scoring the first four points, an 8-1 run by Santa Clara gave them an 8-5 lead. Trailing 12-9, an 8-2 Mustang run gave Cal Poly the lead back at 17-14. After the Broncos scored, the Mustangs put up four straight points to extend the lead to 21-15. Cal Poly took its largest lead of the set of seven at 24-17 before Santa Clara fought off four set points in a row to make it 24-21. Following a Cal Poly timeout, a bad set by the Broncos finished off the win for the Mustangs, 25-21.
Tied 7-7 in the third set, Santa Clara scored four consecutive points to take an 11-7 lead. Cal Poly responded with a 6-2 run to tie it 13-13. The Broncos once again scored four points in a row to go up 17-13 before a 5-1 run by Cal Poly tied it once more 18-18. Tied at 19, a 4-1 run by the Mustangs allowed them to push ahead to a 23-20 lead. After Santa Clara scored, back-to-back kills by Cal Poly finished off the sweep to win the set 25-21.
The Mustangs will play again later today against the host of the tournament, Northern Colorado at 5 p.m. PT. The match will air live on ESPN+.
