SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly currently has five former players on Major League rosters -- four active players and the other in a rehab assignment.
Utility player Mark Mathias drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning of the first game of a Monday doubleheader against Miami, snapping a 2-2 tie en route to a 3-2 Texas Rangers victory. It was Mathias' 10th RBI as a Ranger after being traded by the Milwaukee Brewers on August 1 and he is hitting .333 for his new club
Pitcher Justin Bruihl has been recalled by the Los Angeles Dodgers and has made two relief appearances since his Sept. 5 call-up.
Outfielder Mitch Haniger is in his first hitting slump since returning to the Seattle Mariners' lineup August 6, going 0-for-13 in his last four starts. He missed nearly three months of the season with a high ankle sprain and currently sports a .233 average in 41 games with seven home runs and 23 RBIs.
Pitcher Erich Uelmen has allowed multiple earned runs in three of his last four appearances on the mound for the Chicago Cubs, his ERA jumping from 2.25 to 5.79. He has appeared on the mound in 17 games for the Cubs with a 2-1 record.
Another pitcher, Spencer Howard, has been on the Texas Rangers' disabled list with shoulder impingement since August 8. He made his first rehab start Sunday for Round Rock against Sugar Land and suffered the loss despite four solid innings on the mound with one run, five hits and four strikeouts.
In the minors, pitcher Taylor Dollard moved to 16-2 on the year for the Arkansas Travelers despite giving up season highs of six earned runs and eight hits over five innings in a 10-6 win over Amarillo on Sept. 9.
Dollard leads the Texas League in wins, six ahead of three others, and is fourth in strikeouts with 128 over 139 innings. With the win, he became the first pitcher in the modern history of the Travelers franchise to win 16 or more games in a season.
Lee finished the regular season with a .289 batting average, four home runs and 12 RBIs in 25 games with the Kernals since signing with the Minnesota Twins in late July.
Mustangs in Triple-A include catcher Nick Meyer (Syracuse) and outfielder Nick Torres (Laguna) and pitcher Joey Wagman (Reynosa) in the Mexican League. Those in Double-A include Dollard, outfielder Alex McKenna (Corpus Christi) and outfielder Bradlee Beesley (Tennessee), currently on the 60-day disabled list.
