Mustangs Suffer Road Loss to Portland State Sunday

PORTLAND — Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis recorded her sixth double-double of the season, but Cal Poly fell on the road to Portland State Sunday, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-19).
Playing their fourth match of the week, the Mustangs (0-7) were held to a .186 hitting percentage and a season-low four blocks. The Vikings (4-5) hit .324 and committed just three attack errors in each of the first two sets.
Bullis finished with 25 assists and a match-high 13 digs. Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek led all Mustangs with 11 digs to go with eight digs. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Lizzy Markovska added nine kills with just one error and six digs.
After a back-and-forth start to the first set, Portland State scored five straight points down 9-8 to take a 13-9 lead. Cal Poly then went on a 4-1 run to trim the lead back down to one. With Portland State up 17-16, the Vikings finished the set on an 8-2 run to win it 25-18.
Tied 4-4 in the second set, the Mustangs went on an 8-3 run to take a 12-7 lead. Portland State then scored four consecutive points to cut the Cal Poly lead to one. With the Mustangs leading 21-19 later in the set, the Vikings regained the lead after scoring three straight points. After Cal Poly tied it at 23-23, Portland State scored back-to-back points to take the set 25-23.
To start the third set, Portland State got out to a 7-2 lead. Down 13-7, the Mustangs scored three straight points to cut the deficit to three before a 4-1 run by the Vikings pushed their advantage back up to six. Cal Poly made a final push with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 18-16. However, with Portland State ahead 20-18, the Vikings finished the set with a 5-1 run to win it 25-19.
Cal Poly will head to Greeley, Colo. for a three-match tournament at Northern Colorado to finish off non-conference play. The Mustangs will first face Santa Clara Friday at 9 a.m. PT before taking on the host Bears of Northern Colorado at 5 p.m. PT Friday.
