Mustangs Suffer 3-1 Road Loss to Utah Valley Monday

OREM, Utah — Senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek notched her second double-double of the season, but the Cal Poly volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 23-25) road defeat Monday at the hands of the Utah Valley.
Dvoracek finished with team-highs of 10 kills and 12 digs to go along with three service aces and a pair of blocks. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Tommi Stockham had eight kills while redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kate Slack and redshirt freshman Lizzy Markovska each added six kills.
However, the Wolverines (1-3), the reigning WAC Tournament champions, outhit the Mustangs (0-3) .239 to .140. They also had more digs and blocks and fewer service errors than Cal Poly.
The Mustangs took a 4-3 lead in the first set before Utah Valley went on a 6-1 run to go ahead 9-5. The Wolverines led 14-8 until Cal Poly was able to get it back to within three at 16-13. Up 18-15, Utah Valley scored back-to-back points to stretch their lead back to five. Leading 23-18, the Wolverines scored the next two points to win the set 25-18.
The second set was back-and-forth early until, with Cal Poly leading 8-7, the Mustangs went on a 4-1 run to take a four-point lead. Utah Valley then tied it 13-13 after going on a 5-1 run. Tied at 21, Cal Poly scored consecutive points to take a 23-21 lead before the Wolverines responded with a 3-1 run to tie it again 24-24. The Mustangs answered back with consecutive kills by Stockham and Dvoracek to win the set 26-24.
In the third set down 6-5, Cal Poly scored four straight points to go up 9-6. Later down 12-9, Utah Valley regained the lead after a 5-0 run to go ahead by two. Leading 17-16, the Wolverines used a 4-1 run to go up 21-17. The Mustangs got it back to within two at 22-20, before Utah Valley scored three of the next four points to win the set 25-21.
Utah Valley started the fourth set by taking a 6-3 lead. Tied 10-10, a 7-3 run by Cal Poly gave the Mustangs a 17-13 advantage. The Wolverines cut the deficit to one after going on a 5-2 run. With Utah Valley trailing 23-21, the Wolverines scored the next four points to come from behind and take the set 25-23 to seal their win.
The Mustangs will be off the rest of this week before returning to action Thursday, Sept. 8 when they travel to Seattle to participate in a tournament at the University of Washington where they will face Northwestern and Pepperdine on Thursday before taking on No. 14 Washington on Friday, Sept. 9.
