SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Sierra Brill, a member of the Cal Poly track & field and cross country programs from 2017-22, has been named an assistant coach for the cross country and track & field teams at San Francisco State University, the school announced Friday.
Brill, who graduated from Cal Poly this spring with a degree in art & design and a minor in women, gender & queer studies, was a member of two Big West Conference Championship teams as a Mustang, helping the 2021 women's track team capture their first Big West title in program history with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. In 2018, Brill lifted the women's Big West cross country trophy with her teammates after placing 12th at the conference championships.
"I'm thrilled to have Sierra begin her coaching career with us," Tom Lyons, SF State Director of Cross Country and Track & Field, said about Brill's hiring. "In our conversations, she impressed me with a mature outlook toward the responsibilities of being a coach. Our athletes will benefit tremendously from her experience, leadership, and guidance."
Brill, a San Francisco native and Lowell High grad, was named Big West Freshman of the Year in cross country in 2017 after capturing sixth at the conference championships. During her Cal Poly career, she scored team points for the Mustangs at the Big West cross country meet four times and at the conference track championships twice, and participated in the NCAA West Regional XC meet every season.
Brill also owns a pair of Cal Poly top 10 all-time marks in the 5,000 (10th, 16:28.78) and 10,000 (7th, 34:42.24).
