Cal Poly Women's Soccer Takes Down Westmont 2-0 in Exhibition

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A penalty kick goal by senior midfielder Megan Hansen in the 89th minute sealed a 2-0 victory for Cal Poly women's soccer over NAIA Westmont in an exhibition match Wednesday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs outshot the Warriors 12-1 in the second half and rang shots off the crossbar and post before Hansen drew a foul in the box in the final moments of the match. Hansen, who finished with a goal, assist and two shots on goal, buried the penalty shot in the bottom left corner.
In the 10th minute, senior forward Olivia Ortiz nearly registered the match's first goal when her shot grazed off the right post.
The Mustangs finally broke through four minutes before the half when Hansen feed a pass to sophomore forward Emily Nedom, who buried a shot into the bottom right post past the outstretched arm of the Westmont goalkeeper to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the 71st minute, sophomore defender Emma Brown and redshirt freshman forward Maille Smith fired shots off the crossbar and right post less than a minute apart.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel started in net, recording one save in the first half, and senior goalkeeper Lindsay Kellogg played the entire second half, preserving the shutout.

Cal Poly wraps up preseason play Saturday, Aug. 13 when they travel to San Jose State for an exhibition. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
