
Cal Poly Men’s Soccer Announces 2022 Schedule

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Featuring 12 total home dates at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, four matches against opponent who won 11-plus games last year and a Wednesday, Sept. 21 Blue-Green rivalry home showdown versus UC Santa Barbara, the Cal Poly men's soccer program released its 2022 schedule Thursday afternoon.
Returning four starters and 12 letterwinners from last season's side that finished as Big West Conference regular season runner-up, Cal Poly's 2022 schedule also includes two first-time opponents in Ohio State and Houston Baptist.

NON-CONFERENCE (AUG. 9-SEPT. 24)
Opening preseason training camp on Tuesday, Aug. 9, Cal Poly contests its first event on the new Alex G. Spanos Stadium FieldTurf surface with the program's annual Green versus Gold intrasquad matchup on Wednesday, Aug. 10. The Mustangs then host exhibitions against Division II Fresno Pacific (Saturday, Aug. 13), UNLV (Tuesday, Aug. 16) and Santa Clara (Saturday, Aug. 20), which reached the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
The Mustangs open the 2022 regular season on Thursday, Aug. 25 at Ohio State's Wolstein Classic when facing Dayton for the first time in 17 years. Cal Poly completes Wolstein Classic action on Sunday, Aug. 28 versus Ohio State inside Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
After completing its season-opening, three-match road trip on Friday, Sept. 2 at Portland – which reached the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament – Cal Poly welcomes Houston Baptist to Spanos Stadium on Monday, Sept. 5. Following a Monday, Sept. 12 visit to San Francisco, Cal Poly hosts Saint Mary's on Saturday, Sept. 17 and rival UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
The best-attended sporting events annually in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, the Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara series has drawn 26 of the top 62 regular season crowd figures in NCAA history with all matches occurring during the previous 14 seasons. The matchup inside Spanos Stadium has sold out all 11,075 seats in nine of the last 10 seasons. The 18 combined matches between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara during the last eight years are 18 of the 22 highest attended collegiate soccer games in the United States – including all NCAA Championship and College Cup matches. Since the start of the 2007 season, 292,192 total spectators and an average of 9,740 fans per match have witnessed Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara clash on 30 occasions.
Twenty of the last 27 matches between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara have been decided by one goal or drawn. Seven of Cal Poly's eight victories in the last 30 attempts against UC Santa Barbara have been a one-goal triumph. Twelve of those 30 matches since 2007 have gone to overtime. Just four times since 2007 has one side scored as many as three goals against the other (Cal Poly's 4-1 home victory versus the Gauchos to close 2017 marked the first time since Nov. 9, 2001 that one team had slipped four goals past the other). The Mustangs are undefeated at home against the Gauchos in nine of the last 12 years while UC Santa Barbara has lost exactly once at home to Cal Poly in the last 22 matchups at Harder Stadium.
The Mustangs complete Big West preparations with a Saturday, Sept. 24 home matchup versus San Diego – the last of four West Coast Conference opponents on Cal Poly's schedule.
BIG WEST CONFERENCE (SEPT. 28-OCT. 30)
Having finished two points behind defending Big West regular season co-champions UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine in the standings last fall, Cal Poly – which produced a 5-1-3 conference mark in 2021 – opens Big West action at UC Davis on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
The Mustangs then play two of their next three conference matches at home, hosting 2021 Big West Tournament runner-up UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 2 and UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 8 in a seven-day span either side of a Wednesday, Oct. 5 visit to Cal State Fullerton.
Three of Cal Poly's final five regular season matches occur away from Spanos Stadium, beginning with road dates versus CSUN (Wednesday, Oct. 12) and UC San Diego (Saturday, Oct. 15) before a Wednesday, Oct. 19 home matchup versus Sacramento State.
Before closing the regular season at home to CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Oct. 30, Cal Poly visits UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 22.
POSTSEASON
The top two programs in the 10-team Big West standings receive byes for the Wednesday, Nov. 2 opening round of the conference tournament before hosting semifinal matchups on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Saturday, Nov. 12 Big West Tournament championship match will be played at the highest remaining seed.
First round action for the 2021 NCAA Championship is Thursday, Nov. 17 with second and third round play scheduled for, respectively, Sunday, Nov. 20 and Sunday, Nov. 27. The four quarterfinal matchups will take place on Dec. 3 or 4. The 2022 College Cup will be hosted at WakeMed Park in Cary, N.C., on Friday, Dec. 9 and Sunday, Dec. 11.
