SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly rising sophomore Parker Mapes claimed the championship of the 2022 Silverado Amateur on Thursday on the Silverado Golf Club's North Course in Napa.
Mapes, a graduate of Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, Calif., carded rounds of 67, 70 and 69 on the 7,166-yard, par-72 layout for a 10-under-par 206 total, edging Ian Gilligan of Reno, Nevada, by one stroke.
Mapes recorded 14 birdies and four bogeys over his 54 holes of play, including a bogey-free first round with five birdies and 13 pars. He posted four birdies and two bogeys in the second round and five birdies and three bogeys in Thursday's final round.
Mapes entered the final round tied for second place with Gilligan, one stroke behind Max Brenchley of Alpine, Utah, and BYU. Brenchley slipped to a 73 in the final round for a 209 total and third place while Gilligan carded a final-round 70 to finish one back of Mapes.
Gilligan, who plays golf at Long Beach State, had a chance to catch Mapes on the final hole, but both golfers bogeyed the 539-yard par-5 hole as Mapes held on for the win.
Mapes called the victory his biggest as a golfer.
""It feels really good," Mapes told AmateurGolf.com. "This is definitely my biggest win. I haven't gotten one in a while.
"It's a big amateur, a good field," Mapes added. "It's huge – definitely a big boost for my confidence moving forward into the college season. I'm excited for the season. I've just got to keep this momentum going."
Mapes made a 15-foot putt to save par after blasting out of the left greenside bunker on the par-3, 185-yard seventh hole, then birdied the eighth, ninth, 12th and 14th holes. The par putt at No. 7 "led me into like a tear after I made that par save," said Mapes.
Mapes also got up and down to save par on the par-3 15th hole, as he made a four-foot putt after hitting out of the left bunker.
"I hit it perfect out of the bunker. Luckily, I saw the line, but that one breaks quite a bit," said Mapes.
He crushed his drive to the center of the fairway on the par-4, 14th hole and made the putt for birdie from four feet.
"It kept my confidence there, even late in the round," he said. "It was just simple. I was making things easy for myself, up until the last hole, and wasn't really giving anything back. I wasn't really letting up. I was just hitting fairways and greens, and either making the putt or two-putting.
"When I missed greens, my chipping was on point too. I was making putts. Everything was working for me. Everything was going my way. Not too many bad breaks," said Mapes, the winner of two Junior Golf Association of Northern California events in 2020 and a participant at the U.S. Junior Amateur in 2021. He also played in American Junior Golf Association events.
In his first season at Cal Poly, Mapes played eight rounds, averaging 77.0 strokes per round. His best rounds were a pair of 74s -- the first in the final round of the Oregon State Invitational and the other in the second round of the UC Santa Barbara Collegiate.
