SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — With the fall 2022 season right around the corner, the Cal Poly volleyball program announced Tuesday that seven new players will join the team beginning this fall.
The newcomers consist of six freshmen and a transfer and are made up of four liberos/defensive specialists, a middle blocker, a setter, and an outside hitter/middle blocker to bring the total number of players on the 2022 roster to 19.
More about the new players:
Jolei Akima
Libero/DS
Kahalu'u, Hawai'i (Boise State)
After playing her first two years of collegiate volleyball at Boise State, Akima transfers to Cal Poly where she will have three years of eligibility remaining. While at Boise State, she played in all 50 matches during those two seasons, starting 20 of those. As a sophomore in 2021, she led the team in digs with 315 (2.44 per set) and was tied for second in aces with 33 while helping the Broncos win a Mountain West Championship. She had 16 matches in which she recorded double digit digs, including a career-high 22 against Southern Utah.
As a freshman in 2020, playing an abbreviated 15-match schedule, she was third on the team in digs with 129 (2.39 per set) and had seven matches of double figure digs.
Off the court, she earned both Academic All-Mountain West and was a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete in 2021.
Akima graduated from Kamehameha High School in Honolulu, Hawai'i in 2020 where she helped the volleyball team to two league titles and a second-place state finish as a junior.
Akima chose Cal Poly over several Big West Conference and West Coast Conference programs. She said she chose the Mustangs in part because of the high quality of academics, the location, how supportive the team and coaches are, and the fanbase around Cal Poly volleyball.

A three-year varsity player at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, Bartkowiak helped the Dragons win a league championship all three of those years. As a senior in 2021, she was named First Team All-League and was the team captain.

An Illinois native, Ewen played for Kaneland High School in Maple Park, Ill. As a senior in 2021, she helped the team to a 33-4 record and a Sectional Championship while being named to Daily Chronicle All-Area Team.

A local product from nearby San Luis Obispo High School, Warren committed to Cal Poly earlier this spring to play on both the indoor and beach volleyball teams. At San Luis Obispo High School, she played both indoor and beach volleyball as well as track.
In indoor volleyball, she was named First Team All-Mountain League her sophomore through her senior years. She was also a team captain for two years and was named team MVP as she led the Tigers to a Mountain League Championship her senior season. As a freshman in 2018 she was part of a SLO High School team that won a Division 4 State Championship.
