DAVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly seniors Adelae Fredeen and Dylan Bouzigues both captured second place finishes and All-Conference Team honors at the Big West Multi-Event Championships on Saturday at UC Davis.
In the heptathlon, Fredeen finished 226 points behind conference champion Jessica Swalve (5,023) from UC Santa Barbara.
Bouzigues came up just 58 points short of the BWC title in the decathlon with 6,925. For the second straight year, Bouzigues finished runner-up in the event and garnered All-Conference recognition.
Fredeen tallied 4,797 points in the heptathlon, shattering her previous career best of 4,632 which was recorded at last year's BWC Championships. On Saturday, Fredeen ran a personal best of 2 minutes, 29.62 seconds in the 800-meter to grab fifth and matched her season-best mark in the long jump (17 feet, 3.25 inches) to secure second.
"[Fredeen] just put herself in a good position," Cal Poly Multi-Events Coach Les Courtemanche said. "She was consistent the entire two days and just steady and discipline in all of her events."
Bouzigues sat in seventh (406 points behind the leader) after Day 1 of the multis, but Saturday he surged up the leaderboard by grabbing first in the discus, second in the pole vault and 1,500, third in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the javelin.
"[Bouzigues] battled so hard on Day 2," Courtemanche said. "He kind of put himself in a hole on Day 1 … and if there's anybody on this team that can make that kind of a comeback, it's that kid. He rebounded and responded really well on Day 2."
With their results, Bouzigues and Fredeen both scored 8 team points for the Mustangs.
Freshman Maya Holman and sophomore Shimona Draper also scored team points for Cal Poly in the heptathlon. Holman posted a career best in points (4,435) to take home sixth and Draper, who finished 10th in the Big West heptathlon, snagged eighth (4,294).
Holman earned fourth in the javelin Saturday with a personal best of 105-11. During the BWC Championships, Holman recorded career bests in five of the seven events.
Draper had a pair of personal bests Saturday in the javelin (77-5) and 800 (2:26.76). Her time in the 800 allowed her to finish fourth.
"That girl ran her heart out in that 800," Courtemanche said.
Sophomore Nick Gammal placed seventh in the decathlon, collecting 2 team points for the Cal Poly men. Gammal established a new career best in points (6,020) and set personal records in four events Saturday — 110 hurdles, 1,500, discus and javelin. Gammal was second in the discus and javelin and fourth in the pole vault.
"The one that shocked me was Nick Gammal," Courtemanche said. "We brought him not really expecting him to get [team points] on the board and that kid really fought hard, and put himself in a scoring position."
The Mustangs currently sit in second place in the women's team standings with 12 points thanks to Fredeen, Holman and Draper. They trail UCSB by 4 points. On the men's side, Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton are tied for second with 10 team points.
All five athletes the Mustangs sent to the multis were able to earn team points. Courtemanche was extremely proud of their performance.
"It gives us good momentum going into next week," he said. "They were able to exceed all expectations that we had, so I couldn't be more happy."
The rest of the BWC Championships will be contested on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14 at Woody Wilson Track. The Cal Poly women will be looking to defend their 2021 team title, the first in program history.
