VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Nick Marinconz snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run single and added a sacrifice fly as Cal Poly clinched its three-game Big West Conference baseball series against CSU Bakersfield with a 6-2 victory Saturday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
Travis Weston earned his fourth win of the season, Jason Franks notched his seventh save and Brooks Lee singled twice while making a couple solid defensive plays at shortstop for the Mustangs, who improved to 26-20 overall and 13-7 for second place in the Big West.
CSU Bakersfield, which fell 14-1 in the series opener Friday night, fell to 16-26 and 9-11.
The visiting Roadrunners scored their two runs in the second inning on a leadoff first-pitch home run by Bailey Seeger, his second of the year, and an RBI single by Michael Pollard, his first hit since March 11.
Cal Poly answered with a five-spot in the fourth, all with two outs.
After loading the bases on two singles and a hit batter, Reagan Doss drew a walk for the first run and a wild pitch knotted the score at 2-2. Marinconz, 0-for-7 with the bases loaded prior to Saturday, singled through the right side of the CSU Bakersfield infield to score two runs and Joe Yorke' single to left field made it 5-2 and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Two walks and a wild pitch preceded Marinconz's sacrifice fly in the eighth for an insurance run.
Weston (4-3) produced a quality start by allowing two runs (one earned) and six hits over seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Franks tossed two scoreless frames, giving up one hit, for the save.
The loss was charged to CSU Bakersfield starter Jaykob Acosta (3-4) as he gave up five runs and nine hits over six innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Verdugo tossed two hitless innings, allowing the run in the eighth.
Cal Poly's nine hits included two each by Lee and Marinconz. Aaron Casillas doubled and singled for the Roadrunners, who have lost nine of their last 11 Big West contests after a 7-2 start.
Mustang catcher Ryan Stafford, who notched his third pickoff Friday, threw out a CSU Bakersfield runner trying to steal second base, his ninth caught steal of the year, to cap a strike-em-out throw-em-out double play in the eighth inning.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly senior right-hander Dylan Villalobos (0-2, 3.80 ERA) to face CSU Bakersfield sophomore right-hander Benji Caggianelli (1-2, 4.33 ERA).
