Cal Poly Clinches Big West Series at Hawai'i with 7-2 Victory
5/27/2022 10:28:00 PM | Baseball
Winning nine of 10 Big West series this season, the Mustangs extended their winning streak within a single season to a school-record 13 games -- exceeding the 12 straight wins by the 2014 squad -- and improving their overall mark to 37-20 and conference record to 22-7. Cal Poly is 9-2 in Honolulu since Hawai'i joined the Big West prior to the 2013 season.
Hawai'i, which had won eight consecutive series, fell to 27-24 and 18-11.
Cal Poly built a 5-0 lead in the middle innings with three runs in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the fourth, Yorke singled to drive in the first run, Reagan Doss grounded to shortstop for an RBI and Brett Borgogno drew a bases-loaded walk for a 3-0 Mustang lead.
Yorke singled for another RBI in the fifth and drew a bases-loaded walk himself in the sixth as Cal Poly extended its lead to 5-0.
Hawai'i snapped Weston's 16-inning scoreless streak -- he pitched a complete-game five-hit shutout against UC Davis last week -- with two runs in the eighth on Matt Wong's two-run single.
The Mustangs benefited from a call that was overturned via a replay challenge filed by head coach Larry Lee in the eighth.
Cal Poly restored its five-run advantage in the ninth as a single by Yorke and a walk to Collin Villegas preceded a two-run double by Lopez off the left-field wall.
Hawai'i loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth before Franks induced Aaron Ujimori to line into a game-ending double play right back to Franks. Franks threw to third base for the final out.
Weston (7-3) allowed two runs and eight hits over 7 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. Franks secured the final five outs for his 11th save, equaling Michael Clark's total in 2017.
A southpaw, Weston was facing a team with a lot of success against left-handed pitchers, compiling a .320 batting average for the season entering Friday's contest.
The loss went to Hawai'i starter Blaze Koali'i Pontes (5-1), who gave up five runs (one earned) and five hits over 5 1/3 innings with seven walks and five strikeouts.
Despite the win, Cal Poly was outhit 10-7 by the Rainbow Warriors. Yorke's three-hit day included three RBIs and two runs scored while Lopez added a single and double. Ryan Stafford's 12-game hitting streak came to an end.
Cole Cabrera, Wong and Stone Miyao all had two hits for Hawai'i.
Though Cal Poly set a record for a winning streak in a single season, the 2012 Mustangs, who won their final seven games, and the 2013 squad, which won its first seven contests, combined for a multi-season 14-game winning streak.
Final game of the series as well as the 2022 season for both teams will be played Saturday at 4:05 p.m. Pacific with Cal Poly senior right-hander Dylan Villalobos (0-2, 2.93 ERA) to face Hawai'i junior righty Cade Halemanu (3-5, 4.96 ERA).
