Cal Poly Falls to Hawai'i in Final Game of 2022 Baseball Season, 6-4

HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- A pair of Cal Poly streaks came to an end Saturday afternoon as Hawai'i erupted for four runs in the sixth inning and went on to beat the Mustangs 6-4 in the final game of the Big West series and the 2022 baseball season.
Cal Poly's school-record 13-game winning streak in a single season was snapped and the Mustangs lost a game for the first time this season when outhitting the opposition. The mark ended at 25-1.
Nevertheless, Cal Poly's successful 2022 campaign ended with a 37-21 record and, with a 22-8 conference mark, second place in the Big West for the fourth time in the last five full seasons. The Mustangs won nine of 10 Big West series and lost just three series all year versus Washington, UC Santa Barbara and UNLV.
Hawai'i, which had won eight straight series before Cal Poly won the first two games this weekend by 5-3 and 7-2 scores, finished the year 28-24 and 19-11.
Hawai'i led all the way Saturday, winning despite being outhit 10-5 by Cal Poly.
The Rainbow Warriors scored single runs in the second and third innings and, after Cal Poly tallied its first run in the sixth, broke the game open with a four-run uprising in the bottom of the sixth.
A wild pitch allowed the first run to score, Jordan Donahue doubled to drive in two more and Cole Cabrera capped the rally with a run-scoring double.
Cal Poly closed the gap to 6-4 with three runs in the ninth and twice brought the potential game-tying run to the plate with one out before Buddie Pindel notched a strikeout and line drive to center field, ending the game.
Brooks Lee doubled home the first run and Joe Yorke's two-run double lost in the sun in left field cut Hawaii's lead to two runs and extended his streak of reaching base safely to 32 games.
Nick Marinconz doubled once and singled twice for his fifth three-hit game of the season, finishing with a .317 average. John Lagattuta added two singles.
Cabrera, who played in the outfield for four seasons at Cal Poly before transferring to Hawai'i to pursue his MBA degree, collected a single and double Saturday and was 6-for-12 in the series with two hits in each game.
Lagattuta was 5-for-12, Lopez 5-for-13 and Yorke 5-for-14 in the series for Cal Poly.
The 16 regional hosts will be announced Sunday night with the NCAA Selection Show airing on ESPN2 on Monday at 9 a.m. Pacific.
