6-2 Win over Cal St. Fullerton Clinches First Series Win at Goodwin

FULLERTON, Calif. -- First baseman Joe Yorke drove in five runs with three hits, Nick Marinconz also produced three hits and Travis Weston earned his fifth win as Cal Poly clinched its three-game Big West Conference baseball series at Cal State Fullerton with a 6-2 victory Saturday night.
In winning a series at Goodwin Field for the first time in program history, Cal Poly improved to 30-20 overall with its sixth straight victory, reaching the 30-win mark for the 14th time since and including the 2000 season. The Mustangs, 10 games above the .500 mark for the second time this season, remain in second place in the Big West at 16-7, two games ahead of third-place Hawai'i (14-9), and have clinched a .500 or better record overall for the 19th time this century.
Cal State Fullerton, which has lost nine of its last 13 games, fell to 19-29 and 11-12.
Weston (5-3) allowed two runs and six hits over seven-plus innings with a pair of walks and one strikeout for his second career win over the Titans. A year ago at Baggett Stadium, he tossed a complete-game three-hit 10-0 shutout.
Jason Franks notched his ninth save with three strikeouts over two innings in relief of Weston.
Yorke drove in five of Cal Poly's six runs, the most by a Mustang in a single game since Brooks Lee knocked in six runs, also against Cal State Fullerton, a year ago, a game in which he smacked the first of his two career grand slams. His other was on Friday night.
Yorke doubled to right-center field for an RBI in the first inning, drew a bases-loaded walk in the second frame and belted a two-run home run to right field in the fourth, his third of the year for a 4-0 Mustang lead.
Cal State Fullerton tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout, but Cal Poly got that run back in the sixth on a groundout to second base by Reagan Doss.
Nate Nankil's second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field in the eighth inning, trimmed Cal Poly's lead to 5-2. Again, the Mustangs got the run back in the ninth on an RBI single to center field by Yorke, capping his first five-RBI game as a Mustang.
In addition to the three hits by Yorke and Marinconz, Cal Poly's 14-hit offensive attack also included a single and double by Doss and Collin Villegas plus two singles by Ryan Stafford.
Cal State Fullerton's six hits included two singles by Zach Lew.
The loss was charged to Titan starter Evan Yates (3-2) as the freshman right-hander gave up four runs and 10 hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Stafford, the reigning Big West field player of the week, now has 16 hits in his last 25 at-bats (.640) with 11 RBIs in his last six games since he was moved from the leadoff spot in the batting order to fourth or fifth. He had a four-hit game in Friday night's 13-4 Mustang victory.
Stafford is 23 of 51 (.451) at the plate over his last 12 games with two doubles, one triple, a home run and 12 RBIs to lift his average 41 points to .322.
Marinconz has elevated his batting average 59 points to .326 over his last 34 games, going 42-for-126 (.333) with 11 multiple-hit contests.
Yorke extended his hitting streak to 16 games and reached base safely streak to 24 with his single, double and home run Saturday.
The Mustang first baseman, who produced five-hit games last Friday against CSU Bakersfield and Tuesday versus Pepperdine, is 19-for-33 (.576) with 14 RBIs over his last seven games and 35-for-74 (.473) during his hitting streak to bump his average up 87 points to .339.
The Mustangs stranded a season-high 16 runners on the basepaths.
Cal Poly is now 20-0 when outhitting its opponent, 22-7 when scoring first and 15-7 when scoring in the first inning. The Mustangs have averaged 9.8 runs and 14.5 hits per game during its current six-game winning streak.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. with Cal Poly expected to start senior right-hander Dylan Villalobos (0-2, 3.51 ERA), facing Cal State Fullerton junior right-hander Fynn Chester (1-1, 3.07 ERA).
