VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Designated hitter Matt Lopez led off the ninth inning with his third home run of the season, lifting Cal Poly to a 2-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series Sunday at Goodwin Field.
The win, Cal Poly's seventh straight against the Titans and seventh consecutive win over the last two weeks, lifted the Mustangs to 31-20 for the season and 17-7 for second place in the Big West. On Saturday, Cal Poly reached the 30-win mark for the 14th time since and including the 2000 season. The Mustangs, 11 games above the .500 mark for the first time this season, have clinched a .500 or better record overall for the 19th time this century.
Cal State Fullerton lost for the 10th time in its last 14 games, falling to 19-30 and 11-13.
Lopez smashed a 2-1 pitch from Cameron Repetti over the wall in left-center field opening the ninth inning, snapping a 1-1 tie and completing a three-game series sweep after Jason Franks induced Jakob Schardt to line out to center fielder Reagan Doss with two runners on base for the final out of the game.
"I knew he was coming in with a fastball," Lopez said. "When he's behind in the count, he likes to come in with the heater. I was just trying to hit it hard somewhere."
Lopez hit a walk-off two-run home run for Sierra College against College of San Mateo in the first round of the 2019 California state community college playoffs.
"This one is definitely more special," Lopez said of Sunday's blast.
Cal Poly scored its first run in the third inning as Brooks Lee doubled with one out and scored from third base an out later on Ryan Stafford's RBI single to left-center field.
Cal State Fullerton countered with a run in the fourth as Nate Namkil led off with a triple and came home on a grounder to second base by JJ Cruz.
The score remained 1-1 until Lopez led off the ninth. He had flied out to deep left field in the sixth inning as Schardt made the catch while crashing into the wall.
Cal Poly stranded seven runners on base, all in the first five innings, while Cal State Fullerton left 13 on the basepaths.
Franks (4-2), who notched his ninth save in Saturday's 6-2 win with two innings of relief, earned the victory Sunday with two more frames on the mound, striking out two. Franks was the last of four Mustang pitchers in the game.
Starter Dylan Villalobos tossed two scoreless frames, Bryce Warrecker allowed a run and four hits in three innings and Kaden Sheedy scattered four hits over two frames. The quartet of Mustang pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
The loss went to Repetti as he gave up the home run to Lopez. He pitched 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts, allowing only the one run and one hit via the home run.
Cal Poly's eight hits included two singles by Nick Marinconz. Joe Yorke extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a fifth-inning single to left field and he has reached base safely in 25 straight contests.
Cal State Fullerton's 11-hit offensive attack was paced by catcher Austin Schell with a double and two singles. Caden Connor and Jackson Lyon each had two hits for the Titans.
For the series, Stafford was 7-for-14 with a double and three RBIs while Joe Yorke finished 6-for-13 with two doubles, a home run and eight RBIs. Marinconz also had six hits.
Cal Poly produced a .319 team batting average in the series while the pitching staff compiled a 1.33 ERA, allowing just seven runs over 27 innings.
Cal Poly won a series at Goodwin Field for the first time in program history and is 23-7 when scoring first.
Stafford, the reigning Big West field player of the week, now has 17 hits in his last 29 at-bats (.586) with 12 RBIs in his last seven games since he was moved from the leadoff spot in the batting order to fourth or fifth. He had a four-hit game in Friday night's 13-4 Mustang victory.
Stafford is 24 of 55 (.436) at the plate over his last 13 games with two doubles, one triple, a home run and 13 RBIs to lift his average 40 points to .321.
Yorke, who produced five-hit games a week ago Friday against CSU Bakersfield and Tuesday versus Pepperdine, is 20-for-37 (.541) with 14 RBIs over his last eight games and 36-for-78 (.462) during his hitting streak to bump his average up 85 points to .337.
Marinconz has elevated his batting average 64 points to .331 over his last 35 games, going 44-for-130 (.338) with 12 multiple-hit contests.
Cal Poly has won seven of its eight Big West series, including three sweeps (four overall this season). The Mustangs are 16-9 against Cal State Fullerton since and including Cal Poly's Big West championship season in 2014.
Cal Poly plays its final non-conference game of the season Tuesday at Pepperdine before returning home to host UC Davis for a three-game Big West Conference series Friday through Sunday.
