5/17/2022 7:52:00 PM | Baseball
MALIBU, Calif. -- Steven Brooks pitched four scoreless innings and Joe Yorke produced multiple hits for the seventh time in his last 11 games as Cal Poly wrapped up the non-conference portion of its 2022 schedule with a 14-6 victory over Pepperdine on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Brett Borgogno knocked in three runs with three hits and a sacrifice fly while John Lagattuta also had three hits for the streaking Mustangs who have won eight straight games for the first time since the Big West championship season in 2014.
Cal Poly is 32-20 for the season while Pepperdine, losing for the eighth time in its last 10 games, fell to 22-25.
After a scoreless first inning, Cal Poly erupted for five runs in the second frame and never looked back. A pair of Pepperdine throwing errors accounted for the first run, Reagan Doss doubled to drive in two, Borgogno's sacrifice fly made it 4-0 and Yorke capped the rally with a run-scoring single, extending his hitting streak to 18 games and reached base safely streak to 26 contests.
Borgogno's RBI double in the third gave Cal Poly a 6-0 cushion and the Mustangs added two more in the sixth on a two-run single by Collin Villegas for an 8-0 advantage.
Pepperdine climbed back in with a run in the sixth and five more in the eighth, trimming Cal Poly's lead to 8-6. On the last Wave run in the eighth, Connor Brawshaw tried to score from second on a single by Ryan Johnson, but was tagged out at the plate by Villegas after strong throws from left fielder Ryan Stafford and shortstop Brooks Lee.
Cal Poly regained the upper hand with six runs in the ninth. Lagattuta singled to drive in the first run, a safety squeeze bunt by Borgogno tallied the second run, Nick Marinconz followed with a sacrifice fly, Lee smashed his 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot, off the scoreboard in right field and back-to-back doubles by Tate Samuelson and Stafford produced the final run of the game.
Jason Franks struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
Lee, Stafford and Doss all had two of Cal Poly's 18 hits. The Mustangs have produced double-digit hits in five of their last eight games and at least eight hits in each of their last 19 contests.
Brooks struck out three and scattered three hits over four shutout innings. Zach Button (8-1) allowed a run and three hits with two strikeouts in two innings for the win while Derek True struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh.
The loss was charged to Grant Georges (1-3), the second of seven Pepperdine pitchers used in the game, after he surrendered all five runs in the second inning.
Yorke, the reigning Big West field player of the week who produced five-hit games in a five-day span against CSU Bakersfield and Pepperdine on May 6 and 10, respectively, is 24-for-42 (.571) with 15 RBIs over his last nine games and 40-for-83 (.482) during his hitting streak to bump his average up 96 points to .348.
Stafford now has 19 hits in his last 35 at-bats (.543) with 13 RBIs in his last eight games since he was moved from the leadoff spot in the batting order to fourth or fifth. He had a four-hit game in Friday night's 13-4 Mustang victory at Cal State Fullerton.
Stafford is 26 of 61 (.426) at the plate over his last 14 games with four doubles, one triple, a home run and 14 RBIs to lift his average 40 points to .321.
Though he went hitless Tuesday, Marinconz has elevated his batting average 55 points to .322 over his last 36 games, going 44-for-134 (.328) with 12 multiple-hit contests.
The Mustangs won both midweek games against the Waves for the first time since the 2010 season. Cal Poly, now 21-0 when outhitting the opposition this season, took advantage of four Pepperdine errors, resulting in seven of Cal Poly's 14 runs being unearned, and split its 10 Tuesday games this year.
Cal Poly returns home for its final three Baggett Stadium games this weekend, hosting UC Davis on Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
