SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Alex Reelfs pitched a career-high seven-plus innings and combined with starter Nick Sando and reliever Jared Feikes to hold Cal Poly to just one run as Santa Clara earned a 9-1 victory in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night in Stephen Schott Stadium.
Santa Clara jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and coasted to the win, improving to 22-17 for the year and avenging a 15-6 loss to the Mustangs four weeks ago at Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly, which has yet to be shut out this season, fell to 24-16.
Santa Clara produced three doubles for two runs in the first inning and added three more runs in the second on a two-run double by Dawson Brigman and an RBI groundout.
The Broncos pulled away with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and two more in the eighth.
Cal Poly scored its lone run in the eighth as Ryan Stafford singled and came home on two Santa Clara errors.
Stafford and Samuelson each collected two of Cal Poly's seven hits. Santa Clara's 12 hits included a double and two singles by Brigman and two hits each by Matt Jew and Cal Christofori.
Reelfs (4-5) allowed one unearned run and six hits over seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts.
The loss was charged to Mustang southpaw Noah Larkin (2-3) as he gave up two runs and four hits in the first inning with one strikeout.
The two teams combined for six errors -- four by Santa Clara -- and Cal Poly's eight pitchers combined to give up a season-high nine walks.
Cal Poly returns home for its next two Big West Conference series, starting with first-place UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at 6.
