
No. 13 Mustangs Beat Utah, Fall to Boise State in Final Day of Regular Season

SALT LAKE CITY — The 13th ranked Cal Poly beach volleyball team wrapped up the 2022 regular season Saturday by winning two of its three matches at the University of Utah Invitational. The Mustangs (19-16) fell to Boise State 4-1, before beating Salt Lake Community College in an exhibition match and Utah by scores of 5-0.Tia Miric and freshman Ella Connor after they won their match 21-16, 23-21. Before that however, Boise State picked up wins at the No. 4, 2, and 3 spots in the lineup to clinch the win. It's the Mustangs' first loss to an unranked opponent since the opening weekend of the season when they lost to the University of Tampa.

Cal Poly later faced Salt Lake Community College in an exhibition match that didn't count towards either team or pair records. The Mustangs bounced back with a 5-0 win. Due to a staggered start in which the No. 2 and 4 pairs play before the No. 1, 3 and 5 pairs, redshirt sophomore Susie Lloyd and sophomore Rachel Rahtz played at both the No. 4 and 5 spots, collecting wins at both.
At the No. 3 spot, redshirt junior Delaney Peranich and sophomore Piper Naess teamed up to win 21-8, 21-6. At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Julia Soeller and redshirt junior Vanessa Roscoe won 21-12, 21-7. At the No. 1 spot, redshirt junior Erika Foreman and freshman Piper Ferch teamed up to win 21-9, 21-15.

The Mustangs then closed out the day with a 5-0 win over Utah. The No. 2 pairing of Ferch and redshirt junior Jayelin Lombard started things off with a 21-12, 21-15 win. They finish the regular season with a 20-15 record, the second most wins on the team.
At the No. 4 spot, Naess and redshirt junior Eleonore Johansen teamed up for the first time this season to collect a 21-19, 21-15 win. The dual victory was then clinched for the Mustangs by Miric and Connor at the No. 1 spot. They finish the regular season with a 23-11 record, the most wins on the team and the third most wins by a Big West pair.
Also picking up wins was the No. 3 duo of grad transfer Addie Hermstad and redshirt senior Mariah Whalen as well as the No. 5 pair of Roscoe and Foreman.
With the regular season now complete, Cal Poly will prepare for next weekend's Big West Tournament, which the Mustangs are hosting at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. The Mustangs, the back-to-back Big West champions, will be seeking a three-peat when they head into the April 29-30 tournament as the No. 3 seed.
