RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Pinch-hitter Mark Armstrong's double down the right-field line scored Brooks Lee from second base in the 11th inning and lifted No. 26 Cal Poly to a 4-3 victory over UC Riverside in the second game of a Big West Conference baseball series Saturday night.
After letting a 3-0 lead slip away in the sixth and seventh innings at the Riverside Sports Complex, the Mustangs wriggled out of jams in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings with UC Riverside having potential game-winning runners on base in all three frames.
With the win, Cal Poly's third one-run decision in the last two weeks after losing its first five such contests, the Mustangs kept pace with first-place UC Santa Barbara in the Big West. Cal Poly is 24-14, 10 games above the .500 mark for the first time with its 17th victory in its last 22 games and 11-3 in the Big West after winning its fifth straight conference series. UC Riverside is 5-30 and 2-15.
UC Santa Barbara edged Long Beach State 3-2 Saturday to go to 15-2 in Big West contests, 2.5 games ahead of Cal Poly, and 26-9 for the season.
Cal Poly loaded the bases with no outs in the 11th on singles by Reagan Doss and Brooks Lee plus a walk to Ryan Stafford. Joe Yorke's line drive to shortstop was dropped by Anthony Mata, but he was able to start a double play with a throw to the plate. The relay to third for the second out left Mustang runners at first and second.
Armstrong came off the bench and fouled off three pitches after falling behind in the count 0-2 before doubling down the right-field line to score Lee with the go-ahead run.
"I came up with a runner in scoring position and I was just looking for a ball that was elevated in the zone, something to drive," said Armstrong, the Paso Robles High School graduate and 2017 San Luis Obispo County Player of the Year.
"I knew coach was placing a lot of trust in me in that situation," Armstrong added. "That gave me a lot of confidence. I was just trying to put the ball in play and hopefully it would work out. I got a ball up and I was able to hit it over the first baseman's head."
Jason Franks, who worked the ninth and 10th frames, secured the first two outs in the bottom of the 11th on fly balls to second baseman Nick Marinconz in shallow right field and right fielder John Lagattuta in the right-center field gap, then hit a batter and walked the No. 9 hitter before striking out leadoff batter Jacob Badawi to end the game.
Franks (3-1) earned the win with three innings of relief, throwing a season-high 65 pitches. Mustang starter Travis Weston allowed three runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and no walks in another quality start while Bryce Warrecker tossed 1 2/3 scoreless frames before giving way to Franks.
The loss went to Sergio Ramirez (2-3), who pitched well for four innings before giving up the go-ahead run in the 11th. He threw 90 pitches, double his previous season high, and scattered six hits over 4 2/3 frames with two strikeouts.
Lee, Marinconz and Doss all collected three of Cal Poly's 14 hits -- Doss knocking in two unearned runs in the fourth inning with a double to left-center field. Cal Poly had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Lee doubled and came home on Joe Yorke's single to left-center field.
UC Riverside rallied with two runs in the sixth on two doubles and a single and one more in the seventh on two singles and a groundout, tying the game at 3-3.
The Highlanders had two runners on base with one out in the ninth, another at third with two outs in the 10th and two more at first and second with two outs in the 11th before being turned away.
While the Highlanders were playing their first extra-inning game, Cal Poly is 1-1 in overtime contests, falling to UNLV 7-6 in 10 innings on March 4.
UC Riverside's nine hits included a single and double by Dylan Orick. Third baseman Nathan Webb ended his season-long 0-for-39 slump with a seventh-inning single.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly senior right-hander Dylan Villalobos (0-1, 2.75 ERA) to face UC Riverside sophomore righty Tucker Juline (1-2, 9.67 ERA).
Villalobos has started each of the last five series finales for the Mustangs.
