RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- UC Riverside scored twice in three of the first four innings and parlayed 10 hits, five walks and three batters into an 8-3 victory over Cal Poly in the finale of a Big West Conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Leadoff hitter Jacob Badawi and catcher Taylor Juline each drove in three runs as the Highlanders earned their sixth win in 36 games and third victory in 18 Big West contests.
Cal Poly fell 3 1/2 games off the pace set by UC Santa Barbara in the Big West, falling to 11-4 in conference games and 24-15 overall. The Gauchos defeated Long Beach State 10-1 to go to 16-2 in Big West games.
After the Highlanders scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, Cal Poly tied the game in the second as Nick Marinconz singled, Matthias Haas tripled to score Marinconz and Tate Samuelson singled to drive in Haas.
UC Riverside scored twice more in the third and fourth frames to take the lead for good. Cal Poly tallied one run in the fifth on Joe Yorke's RBI single but was held off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
The Mustangs had two runners on base with one out in the third but a double play erased the threat. Cal Poly also left the bases loaded in the eighth.
Yorke produced his second three-hit game of the series and went 7-for-15 with three RBIs in the three games. Haas added two hits Sunday.
Tucker Juline (2-2) earned the win, allowing three runs and eight hits over six innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Joey Magrisi notched the save with three innings of work in relief.
The loss was charged to Mustang senior Dylan Villalobos (0-2), who gave up four runs and three hits in three innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
Marinconz was 6-for-13 in the series with a double and two RBIs while Brooks Lee was 5-for-14 with two doubles, raising his season total to 19.
Cal Poly visits Santa Clara for a single game Tuesday night, then plays its next two Big West series at home, hosting UC Santa Barbara this weekend and CSU Bakersfield in two weeks.
