Cal Poly Shuts Out UC San Diego 7-0 for Fifth Straight Victory

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Drew Thorpe surpassed his career high with a school Division I record 15 strikeouts while Joe Yorke and Reagan Doss each drove in two runs as Cal Poly stretched its winning streak to five games with a 7-0 shutout against UC San Diego on Friday night.
The win improved the Mustangs' overall mark to 12-9 and Big West record to 4-0 in Cal Poly's first game ever played at Triton Ballpark.
Thorpe (3-0) struck out the side twice, broke his previous career high of 13 set against BYU two years ago and scattered three hits over seven innings before giving way to Jason Franks, who struck out five over the final two innings.
The combined 20 strikeouts tied a school mark set in a 13-inning 4-3 win against Cal State Fullerton in 2014 as Slater Lee, Bryan Granger, Taylor Chris and Reed Reilly combined for the 20 strikeouts. Thorpe's 15 strikeouts matched that of Matt Imhof against Seattle in 2014.
UC San Diego's only serious scoring threat came in the seventh as Austin Smith and Blake Fitzgerald singled, putting runners at first and second with one out. Thorpe induced Marc Filia to ground out and struck out Matt Halback to end the threat.
Prior to the seventh, the sophomore right-hander had faced just one batter over the minimum. A leadoff single in the third inning was erased on a double play and a leadoff walk in the fourth was wiped out when Michael Fuhrman was thrown out at second trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt.
Yorke broke up a scoreless duel with a solo home run, a line drive shot to right field leading off the fourth inning. It was Yorke's first homer of the year and second of his Mustang career. He also homered against CSUN a year ago.
The Mustangs broke the game open with a four-run sixth-inning rally.
Collin Villegas made it 2-0 with a single to left field and Nick Marinconz, who singled twice earlier in the game to briefly lift his average above .400, reached base on a no putout fielders choice, knocking in the third run of the game.
Reagan Doss capped the uprising with a two-run single to right field.
Cal Poly added two insurance runs in the ninth on an RBI single by Ryan Stafford and a fielder's choice by Yorke.
Cal Poly's nine-hit offensive attack was paced by Villegas, Marinconz and Doss, each with two hits, and Yorke's home run.
Thorpe pitched a complete-game three-hitter in Cal Poly's other shutout this season, a 5-0 victory over Harvard.
Second game of the series against UC San Diego will be played Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Cal Poly junior southpaw Travis Weston (2-0, 4.60 ERA) to face Triton graduate right-hander Noah Conlon (1-4, 6.53 ERA).
Sunday's series finale starts at 1 p.m.
