UC San Diego Evens Series Against Cal Poly with 12-1 Victory

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Held scoreless on three hits Friday night, UC San Diego broke through for a dozen runs on 12 hits in a 12-1 victory over Cal Poly in the second game of a Big West Conference baseball series Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark.
The Tritons, who had won just one of their last 13 games after a 6-2 start, improved to 8-14 overall and 1-1 in Big West games. Cal Poly had a five-game winning streak snapped, falling to 12-10 and 4-1.
Marc Filia belted a two-run home run in the second inning and UC San Diego pulled away with four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and three more in the eighth.
Cal Poly averted a shutout in the ninth as Matthias Haas singled, took second on a groundout and scored on a single to left-center field by Joe Yorke.
Outfielder John Lagattuta was the lone Mustang with multiple hits, singling twice.
Catcher Emiliano Gonzalez drove in four runs with a double and two singles for UC San Diego. designated hitter Blake Fitzgerald added two doubles and a single while Filia contributed two singles with his home run, driving in three runs.
Noah Conlon (2-4) earned the win six scoreless innings on the mound, walking three, striking out six and scattering four hits. Joey Soberon tossed three innings for his first save.
Mustang junior southpaw Travis Weston (2-1) suffered the loss, giving up five runs and four hits over 3 1/3 innings.
Rubber game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly senior right-hander Dylan Villalobos (0-1, 3.24 ERA) to face UC San Diego freshman right-hander Ryan Forcucci (0-1, 4.95 ERA).
