Baron Szeto notched a 72 with five birdies in the opening round of The Goodwin on Thursday at Stanford Golf Course.

STANFORD, Calif. -- Cal Poly golfer Austin Liu opened with a 71 Thursday and Baron Szeto checked in with a 72 at The Goodwin, a 28-team men's golf tournament hosted by Stanford on the Stanford Golf Course.

Liu is tied for 71st place with 15 other golfers while Szeto is tied for 87th place with 11 fellow golfers. Liu carded four birdies and five bogeys in his round while Szeto notched five birdies and seven bogeys.

Cal Poly is tied for 24th place with Drexel, both with four-person 11-over-par 291 totals. Stanford leads with a 12-under-par 268 aggregate, two shots ahead of SMU. Washington and Georgia Tech share third place, three strokes behind the Cardinal.

Kristopher Stiles of San Jose State and Barclay Brown of Stanford share the individual lead after 18 holes of play with six-under-par 64s. Five other golfers are tied for third place with 65s.

Cal Poly's other scoring golfers are Sean Lehman and Nicholas Mok, both with 74s and tied for 115th place, and Joey Zambri with a 79 for 138th place.

Second round will be played Friday with the final round set for Saturday.
