Cal Poly Stretches Winning Streak to Four, Defeating Cal 14-4
3/22/2022 7:27:00 PM | Baseball
Samuelson produced Cal Poly's first multi-homer game in three years -- Nick DiCarlo homered twice at Fresno State in 2019 -- and Nick Marinconz doubled twice in a three-hit game for Cal Poly, which improved to 11-9 overall.
Cal, which had a five-game winning streak against the Mustangs snapped Tuesday, fell to 10-10. The two teams meet again April 5, also in Berkeley.
Cal scored twice in the first inning on a double play and an RBI single by Hance Smith.
Cal Poly turned the game around by scoring the next 11 runs, including three in the third inning, four in the seventh and three more in the ninth, to win going away.
Samuelson's solo homer in the second cut Cal's lead to 2-1. In the third, a double by Marinconz and single by Reagan Doss preceeded Stafford's game-tying sacrifice fly and Brooks Lee belted his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to break the 2-2 deadlock.
A sacrifice fly by Matt Lopez and run-scoring single by Doss made it 6-2 in the fourth and Stafford's RBI single in the seventh gave Cal Poly a 7-2 cushion.
The Mustangs broke the game open in the seventh as Samuelson hit a three-run home run, again to left field, and a Cal error allowed the fourth run of the inning to score.
Cal Poly's three insurance runs in the ninth came courtesy of RBI singles by Stafford and Joe Yorke plus a sacrifice fly to right by Collin Villegas.
The two teams combined to use 14 pitchers who combined to throw 349 pitches in the three-hour, 30-minute contest.
Zach Button (2-0), the second of six Cal Poly pitchers, earned the win as he threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
The loss went to Cal starter Connor Sullivan (0-1), who gave up three runs and three hits over two-plus innings.
Cal Poly's 15-hit offensive attack included three each by Samuelson and Marinconz and two off the bats of Stafford, Lee and Doss.
Caleb Lomavita and Trevor Tishenknel each had two of Cal's 10 hits.
Cal Poly, which swept CSUN in a Big West series last weekend, continues conference play Friday through Sunday at UC San Diego.
