No. 12 Mustangs Win Two of Three Matches Monday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The 12th ranked Cal Poly beach volleyball team finished up its second straight weekend at home by winning two of its three matches Monday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. The Mustangs beat Boise State (5-0) and No. 16 Arizona (4-1) and fell to No. 10 Cal (4-1).Addison Hermstad and freshman Peyton Dueck went a perfect 6-0, redshirt senior Tia Miric and freshman Ella Connor were 5-1, and redshirt junior Jayelin Lombard and freshman Piper Ferch finished 4-2.
Cal Poly started the morning strong against Boise State with a 5-0 shutout. The No. 5 pair of sophomore Sam Strah and redshirt junior Delaney Peranich got on the board first with an impressive 21-16, 21-8 win.
The No. 2 duo of Lombard and Ferch then won in straight sets 21-14, 21-19 to put the Mustangs ahead 2-0. Dueck and Hermstad were close behind them at the No. 3 spot, winning 21-16, 21-15 to clinch the dual for Cal Poly.
Also collecting wins in the match was the No. 4 pairing of sophomore Piper Naess and redshirt sophomore Josie Ulrich, who were victorious 21-16, 21-13. At the No. 1 spot, Miric and Connor, who Monday were named the Big West Pairs Team of the Week for the first time this season, rounded out the sweep of the Bronocos with a 22-20, 21-15 win.

A few hours later, the Mustangs were back on the sand to face a strong No. 10 Cal team, who went 6-0 in the two-day event.
The Golden Bears started with wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots to take a 2-0 lead before their No. 2 duo later clinched the victory.
After Cal's No. 1 pair won to make it 4-0, Dueck and Hermstad were victorious at the No. 3 spot in three-sets, 21-18, 17-21, 15-9.

In their final match of the day against No. 16 Arizona, Dueck and Hermstad started it off with a 21-16, 21-17 win at the No. 3 spot. They are now 11-1 together this season and have won their last 10 matches.
Then at the No. 5 spot, Ulrich and redshirt junior Vanessa Roscoe gave the Mustangs a 2-0 dual lead after winning their match 21-16, 21-18.
Miric and Connor clinched the match for Cal Poly from the No. 1 spot after winning 21-17, 21-12. They now boast a record of 12-5 this season and are 8-2 in their last 10 matches.
Lombard and Ferch also were winners in the match, taking down Arizona's No. 2 pairing in three sets, 16-21, 21-15, 19-17. They now have a record of 10-8 together and are 7-3 in their last 10 matches.
Up next for Cal Poly is the 'Big West Challenge' taking place in Long Beach this year Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26. The Mustangs will face all six other Big West teams there over the two days.
It was a strong showing for Cal Poly this weekend as they finished the two-day event with a 5-1 record. The Mustangs have won seven of their last eight matches to improve to 10-8 on the season in what has been a tough schedule to start the season with 10 of their first 18 matches against ranked opponents.
