VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Drew Thorpe pitched his first career complete game for Cal Poly, striking out 11 with no walks in a three-hit 5-0 shutout against Harvard in the opening game of a four-game non-conference baseball series Friday night inside Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly's last nine-inning complete game shutout was thrown by Trent Shelton in a 16-0 triumph over Hawai'i on May 4, 2018. Travis Weston tossed a seven-inning 10-0 shutout over Cal State Fullerton during the 2021 season when the Big West Conference had a mercy rule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thorpe reached double figures in strikeouts for the fourth time in four starts this season and for the eighth time in his Mustang career. The redshirt sophomore right-hander retired the side in order six times, threw 118 pitches and lowered his ERA from 3.26 to 2.22.
Harvard had just three baserunners in the game -- a fourth-inning one-out double down the left-field line by Jake Berger, an eighth-inning two-out single up the middle by Ben Rounds and a leadoff ninth-inning double by Hunter Baldwin down the right-field line.
No Harvard runner reached third base.
Cal Poly, which had lost four of its last five games after a 4-3 start, improved to 6-7 with Friday's win in the first meeting ever between the two schools in baseball. Harvard fell to 4-4.
The Mustangs scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a two-out Harvard error in the outfield, and added two insurance runs in the eighth.
Walks to John Lagattuta, Reagan Doss and Brett Borgogno loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth. Ryan Stafford's fly ball to shallow right-center field was dropped when center fielder Baldwin made contact with right fielder Rounds, allowing two runs to score. Brooks Lee doubled to right-center field, driving in the third run of the inning.
Cal Poly also loaded the bases in the eighth inning on two singles and a walk. Stafford drew another walk to force in a run and Lee's sacrifice fly to left-center field gave the Mustangs a 5-0 lead.
The loss was absorbed by Harvard starter Adam Stone (1-1) as he allowed three runs, all unearned, and one hit over four innings with nine walks. Tanner Smith and Porter Jordheim each pitched two innings in relief for the Crimson.
After seven innings of play Friday, Cal Poly led 3-0 though each team had just one hit. Thorpe had struck out 10 Harvard batters while Mustang hitters had drawn 11 walks.
The two teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday followed by the series finale Sunday, also at 1 o'clock.
