Three Score Double Figures, But Cal Poly Falls at CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Junior forward Julia Nielacna (pictured) scored a season-high 21 points and two other Mustangs finished in double figures but Cal Poly, who led by four at halftime, fell on the road to CSU Bakersfield Tuesday, 85-71.
Nielacna scored 16 of her 21 in the second half for the Mustangs (3-18, 2-10 BWC), who made a season-high nine threes including six in the first half. Junior guard Maddie Willett added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman guard Jazzy Anousinh poured in a career-high 11 points.
After the Mustangs trailed by one after the first, neither team was able to separate themselves in the second as there were three ties and seven lead changes throughout the quarter with neither team leading by more than four. With 36 seconds left in the first half, sophomore guard Junie Dickson drilled a three to give Cal Poly a 37-33 lead heading into halftime.
With Cal Poly leading 43-41 with just under five minutes left in the third, the Roadrunners (4-16, 3-8 BWC) went on a 9-2 run to go up by five. After CSU Bakersfield took its largest lead of the quarter of seven, Nielacna completed an and-one to cut the deficit to four heading into the fourth.
The Roadrunners opened the fourth quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 15 point lead. Still trailing by 15 with 3:43 left, the Mustangs went on a 7-0 run to trim the CSU Bakersfield lead to eight. The Roadrunners then came back with a 7-0 run of their own to push the lead back to 15.
Cal Poly will now prepare to host conference leader Hawai'i at Mott Athletics Center Saturday at 2 p.m. for the final home game of the year. Saturday will be senior day in which six players (Kirsty Brown, Julia Nielacna, Hannah Scanlan, Zoe Stachowski, Maddie Vick, Maddie Willett) will all be honored in a ceremony prior to the game.
