Mustangs Fall to First-Place Hawai’i Saturday in Home Finale

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior guard Maddie Vick and junior forward Julia Nielacna each scored double figures but Cal Poly, outscored 36-15 in the second half, fell to Hawai'i in its final home game of the regular season Saturday, 73-49.
Vick finished with a team-high 14 points, the 12th time this season she's scored double digits, to go along with seven rebounds. Nielacna scored 11 points while redshirt freshman Sarah Dumitrescu added nine points and six rebounds.
Mustang graduate forward Kirsty Brown tied the program record for career games played after getting the start. She has played in 124 career games and needs just one more to break the record.
The Mustangs (3-19, 2-11 BWC) shot 46-percent in the first quarter to lead the conference-leader Rainbow Wahine (15-9, 11-3 BWC) 18-17.
Hawai'i opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run to take a seven point lead. After Hawai'i took a 37-32 advantage, a layup by Dumitrescu with six seconds left in the half cut the Rainbow Wahine lead down to three heading into the second half.
Hawai'i broke the game open after going on a 15-3 run through the first seven minutes of the third quarter to go up by 16 and took a 55-41 lead into the fourth as the Mustangs were held to seven points in the third.
Cal Poly never got closer than within 14 in the fourth as the Rainbow Wahine went up by as much as 26.
The Mustangs will play their final two games of the regular season on the road next week. Cal Poly will face UC Irvine Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. followed by UC San Diego Saturday, March 5 at 4 p.m.
