Second Quarter Struggles Plague Mustangs Against UC Riverside

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman guard Annika Shah (pictured) and senior forward Zoe Stachowski both scored in doubles figures but Cal Poly, outscored 18-4 in the second quarter, fell at home Saturday to UC Riverside, 59-53.
Shah matched a career-high with 11 points while Stachowski scored a season-high 11 points as well. Junior guard Maddie Willett added eight points and tied her career-high with nine rebounds for the Mustangs (3-17, 2-9 BWC) who shot 38.6-percent from the field while the Highlanders shot 33.3-percent.
Cal Poly got off to a hot start to the game, shooting 53-percent in the first quarter. Up 13-12 with just over two minutes left in the quarter, the Mustangs rattled off a 9-0 run to end it and take a 22-12 lead into the second.
UC Riverside opened the second quarter scoring 11 straight unanswered points over the first four minutes to take a 23-22 lead. From there, Cal Poly scored just four points the rest of the quarter as the Highlanders took a 30-26 lead into halftime.
After UC Riverside took a 38-32 lead with 2:19 left in the third quarter, the Mustangs went on an 8-2 run to finish the quarter to tie it heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw five ties and two lead changes in it. Tied 51-51 with 1:16 left, the Highlanders scored six straight points to pull away.
The Mustangs will now play three of their final four games on the road, starting Tuesday against CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m.
