Cal Poly Falls to Washington, 6-5, in 2022 Baseball Season Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Washington rallied from a 4-2 deficit with four runs, two of them unearned, in the sixth and seventh innings and went on to beat Cal Poly 6-5 in the opener of a three-game non-conference baseball series and the season opener Friday night inside Baggett Stadium.
In a game played on a cool winter night with temperatures in the 50s, as many as five Mustangs were or could have been injured, including shortstop Brooks Lee twice and relief pitcher Dylan Villalobos.
Lee avoided injury and stayed in the game after making an awkward throw from deep in the hole at shortstop in the sixth inning while Villalobos was removed from the game in the eighth after a possible injury of his own.
Lee, Matthias Haas and Brett Borgogno all collided on a shallow fly ball behind second base. All were able to stay in the game. Kyle Scott, another relief pitcher, slipped on the grass while trying to field a comebacker in the seventh. He made the throw to first base from his wallet, but it was too late.
That was the inning in which Washington scored twice to erase a 5-4 Cal Poly advantage. A sacrifice fly by A.J. Guerrero tied the game at 5-5 and a wild pitch thrown by Scott enabled the go-ahead run to score.
Cal Poly managed just one baserunner over the final three frames. Ryan Stafford drew a walk leading off the seventh but was erased on a double play. Ryan Velasquez retired all four Mustang he faced and Colton McIntosh retired the side in order in the ninth for a save.
Larry Lee, beginning his 20th season as head coach of the Mustangs, had won eight of his last 10 season openers and fell to 12-8 in such affairs with Friday's loss.
Cal Poly's offense sprinted out of the gate with four runs in the first two innings.
Tate Samuelson's single up the middle tied the game at 1-1 and Doss broke the deadlock with a two-run triple to the gap in right-center field. Brett Borgogno opened the second with a double down the left-field line and eventually scored on a groundout for a 4-2 Mustang lead.
But Cal Poly was held to just one run and three hits the rest of the way.
Stefan Raeth, the second of five Washington pitchers used in the game, earned the victory with one run and two hits allowed over three innings. The quintet of Husky pitchers combined to strike out 10 Mustang batters.
Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore right-hander Drew Thorpe struck out double-digit batters for the fifth time in his Mustang career, notching 11 Friday night. He came out of the game in the sixth inning leading 4-2, but was not involved in the decision, giving up four runs (three earned) and six hits over 5 1/3 frames.
Scott suffered the loss, giving up the tying and go-ahead runs in the seventh. Jason Franks, the last of four Mustang pitchers used in the game, retired all four batters he faced.
Washington outhit Cal Poly 10-8, led by Preston Viltz, Will Simpson, Cam Clayton and Johnny Tincher, each with two hits. Both of Tincher's hits were doubles.
Samuelson and Doss each had two hits for Cal Poly.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. with southpaw Travis Weston of Cal Poly to face Washington lefty Adam Bloebaum (2-5, 4.15 ERA at UW in 2021).
Sunday's series finale starts at 1 o'clock.
