Washington Rallies for Pair of Runs in Ninth Inning for 4-3 Victory
2/19/2022 8:15:00 PM | Baseball
after hitting tiebreaking home run
in eighth inning Saturday.
Playing just his third game since 2019, Haas led off the eighth inning with a solo blast to left field on an 0-1 pitch. Haas, a graduate of Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High School, played one game for Brown in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and no Ivy League team played baseball in 2021, also because of COVID-19.
Trailing 3-2, Washington was down to its final out in the ninth when, with runners on first and second, Guerrero hit Derek True's first pitch to the wall 385 feet away from home plate to drive in the two runners and give the Huskies a 4-3 lead.
Cal Poly rallied in the bottom of the ninth, only to lose a one-run game for the second straight night. With one out, Ryan Stafford doubled to left-center field, Brooks Lee was intentionally walked and both runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch.
Colton McIntosh settled down and struck out both Matt Lopez and Tate Samuelson to end the game and earn his second save in as many nights.
Mustang starter Travis Weston went six innings on the mound, allowing two runs and scattering 10 hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. True retired six of the seven batters he faced in his first two innings of work before Johnny Tincher led off the ninth with a full-count double, setting the stage for Washington's last-inning heroics.
True (0-1), who struck out two with a pair of walks, suffered the loss.
The win went to Jack Enger (1-0), the fourth of five Washington pitchers used in the game. He never retired a batter but Tincher threw out Nick Marinconz trying to steal second base, ending the eighth inning.
For the second straight night, Washington outhit Cal Poly, this time 12-9, led by Tincher, the No. 9 batter in the Washington order, with a double and two singles. Tincher doubled twice in Friday's 6-5 Husky victory.
Guerrero, Preston Viltz and Will Simpson each had two hits for Washington. Simpson led off the fourth inning with a home run to left field and the Huskies scored their second run in the sixth on a double by Michael Snyder and a single by Viltz, tying the game at 2-2.
Cal Poly took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Joe Yorke's one-out bases-loaded two-run single to left field. Two strikeouts notched by Washington starter Adam Bloebaum limited the damage to just the two runs.
Cal Poly's nine hits included two singles and a double by Stafford and a pair of singles by Marinconz. Stafford, a true freshman, is off to a 4-for-7 (.571) start at the plate for the Mustangs.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly redshirt sophomore right-hander Kaden Sheedy to face Washington sophomore right-hander Jared Engman.
