SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Triana Fernando, who has earned a pair of top-two finishes on the Washington Junior Golf Association tour this year, has signed the National Letter of Intent to further her academic and athletic careers at Cal Poly.
Fernando finished tied for first in the 2022 WJGA State Championship last August at the Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club with a five-over-par 221 total (76, 71 and 74), falling in a playoff to Brooke Gelinas, and also was runner-up in the District 6-Sub-District 4 event at Auburn, Wash.
Fernando also earned a seventh-place finish at the First Tee National Championship and placed sixth at the AJGA Junior at Palouse Ridge with a low round of 68 (-4). Additional tournament highlights include first-place finishes in the Washington St. Patrick's Day Open, which included a low second-round 70, and the Washington National Husky Showcase with the low second-round score of 71.
"Triana is an exceptional student-athlete and embodies the values of our program," said Mustang head coach Courtney Roberts. "She is hardworking, smart and has a lot of firepower. She excels in both the classroom and on the golf course. Throughout the recruiting process, we have been impressed by her competitive drive and look forward to all the great qualities she will bring to continue to elevate our program."
Fernando is a 4.0 student at TESLA Stem High School in Redmond, Wash., and competes in golf at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, Wash., where she earned first-team All-KingCo All-League honors as a junior. She finished 25th among 217 golfers in the 2022 Washington High School State Championship with rounds of 75 and 72 and was tied for 10th place in the Division 3A finals with a 75 and 72 as well, both events held last May.
Fernando plans to study mechanical engineering at Cal Poly.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly men's golf team has signed Reese Sato, a senior at Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom, Calif., to the National Letter of Intent.
Sato has a 73.28 scoring average and has earned 13 top-10 finishes in American Junior Golf Association events over the last four years.
Top finish was a tie for second place in the JTNC Holiday Series III and a third in the 92nd NCGA Junior Championship, both in 2021.
Sato claimed top honors in the Sacramento City Men's Golf Championship in June at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex with a seven-under-par 137 total.
"Reese is our solo early NLI signee for the class of 2023," said Mustang head coach Phil Rowe. "In the recruiting process, we were very impressed with his maturity in applying himself to his academics and to his golf.
"His golf swing exemplifies power with poise and it has already taken him to the top of the Northern California junior golf circuits, alongside a significant men's amateur level victory among all the best players in his home city of Sacramento," Rowe added. "The sky is the limit in college golf for Reese and we look forward to welcoming him on the squad in the Fall of 2023."
At Vista Del Lago, Sato was named CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section MVP in 2020 and 2021 and led the Eagles to the CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship last May with a round of 70 at the Bing Maloney Golf Course in Sacramento.
Sato has performed community service as a volunteer for both U.S. Kids Golf and The First Tee of Greater Sacramento.
