Mustangs Fall to Bruins in Regular Season Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – senior forward Julia Nielacna and sophomore guard Sydney Bourland each scored in double figures for Cal Poly but the Mustangs fell in their regular season opener at UCLA Monday at Pauley Pavilion, 84-48.
Photo courtesy of Jesus Sepulveda Nielacna led the Mustangs with 13 points while Bourland finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Junior guard Junie Dickson added seven points. Charisma Osborne led the Bruins, who scored 22 second chance points, with 20 points and nine rebounds. Cal Poly got out to a 4-2 lead after the first two minutes of the game. From there, UCLA went on a 21-2 run over the next six minutes and led 25-11 after the first quarter. Junie Dickson hit a jumper to open the second quarter before UCLA scored 10 straight points over the next three minutes. Sparked by three straight layups by Nielacna, the Mustangs finished the quarter on an 8-5 run. Sydney Bourland and Dickson each made threes early in the third quarter but a 16-6 UCLA run extended their lead to 61-31. The Mustangs were able to hold the Bruins without a field goad the final two and a half minutes of the quarter as they ended it with a Nielacna three to cut it to 69-40. Cal Poly returns to San Luis Obispo for its regular season home opener Thursday, Nov. 10 against Simpson at 11 a.m.
